Job Description

High Point University seeks a motivated and collaborative Assistant Director of Athletic Bands to help build a thriving high-profile athletic band program aligned with university goals. The successful candidate will assist the Director of Athletic Bands in all aspects of instruction direction and administration of the Spirit of High Point Athletic Bands with an emphasis on student recruitment and retention program development and game-day excellence.

This is a full-time 40-hour-per-week position that will require regular evening and weekend commitments throughout the academic year and summer months.

We are looking for a leader and collaborator someone who is energized by the opportunity to grow a program contribute ideas and inspire students both musically and personally.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the design instruction and execution of athletic band rehearsals including pre-season band camp and all game-day performances.
  • Provide musical and visual instruction to all band members; conduct at rehearsals and performances as assigned.
  • Lead or supervise sectionals student leadership training and/or coordinate instruction for brass woodwinds or percussion based on expertise.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Athletic Bands in the artistic direction of the ensembles including music selection and performance planning.
  • Serve as a game-day leader at approximately 30 events annually including mens and womens home basketball games volleyball games and select other athletic and recruiting events across campus with a strong emphasis on enhancing the fan experience.
  • Coordinate with Marketing and game operations staff to ensure a smooth engaging and cohesive game-day fan experience.
  • Participate actively in the recruitment and retention of student musicians including developing and executing recruitment strategies attending high school events and partnering with Admissions.
  • Assist with day-to-day administrative operations including inventory logistics travel and budgeting as needed.
  • Contribute original music arranging when appropriate based on interest skillset and program needs.
  • Supervise student workers and coordinate outside staff or consultants as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education & Experience:

  • Masters or Doctoral degree in Music Music Education or related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience with athletic bands required; university-level experience preferred (includes service as a graduate assistant).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in student recruitment and retention.
  • Background in wind conducting and/or athletic band coordination.
  • Strong secondary skills in brass percussion or woodwinds.
  • Experience with music notation software (e.g. Finale Sibelius Dorico)
  • Knowledge of creative strategies for game-day engagement and enhancing fan experience including innovative or outside-the-box approaches to energizing audiences and maximizing band impact.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Athletic Bands.
  • The ADOAB is responsible for:
    • Supporting weekly rehearsals and sectionals for the Spirit of High Point Athletic Bands
    • Providing game-day leadership at 30 events annually including mens and womens home basketball games volleyball games and select other athletic and admissions events
    • Contributing to the recruitment and enrollment growth of the band program
    • Supporting the administrative and creative planning of the ensembles
