URM Stores is seeking a results-driven and detail-oriented Director of Safety with proven progressive experience and a strategic data-informed approach to workplace safety environmental compliance and risk management. This leadership role is instrumental in fostering a culture where safety is not just a prioritybut a fundamental value integrated across all levels of the organization.


The Director of Safety will be responsible for developing implementing and managing comprehensive warehouse Safety programs aligned with regulatory requirements corporate standards and best practices. This role will promote awareness engagement and ownership of Safety initiatives across teams while ensuring full compliance with all applicable regulations.


This position encompasses conducting assessments leading investigations performing audits and overseeing the successful implementation of programs and policies to maintain a safe compliant and high-performing workplace.


Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Lead the development implementation and continuous improvement of EHS programs aligned with URMs EHS standards.
  • Maintain a strong presence on the warehouse floor actively promoting and reinforcing safe practices every day.
  • Foster a proactive and positive warehouse safety culture.
  • Identify and leverage best practices by collaborating across the EHS network.
  • Lead EHS planning at the warehouse including goal-setting prioritizing warehouse safety and compliance needs capital and operating expenses related to EHS and establishing adequate systems for tracking results and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with site and department leaders and employees on implementation of EHS initiatives.
  • Coordinate resources to ensure plant EHS requirements are understood and satisfied.
  • Ensure a proper warehouse injury prevention plan exists to continuously improve safety performance.
  • Ensure a proper warehouse compliance plan exists to ensure awareness of and good standing with regulatory and URM EHS requirements.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate EHS inspections and self-assessments to assure compliance with URM EHS standards Business Group EHS requirements and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide progress reports as appropriate to warehouse management teams employees and extended management teams as necessary.
  • Maintain records data and other EHS related information necessary to satisfy legislative and company requirements.
  • Work with warehouse teams and engineering function to design install and maintain new or modified equipment/processes as necessary to ensure EHS risks are well managed.
  • Facilitate the development implementation and annual review of EHS policies/procedures and initiatives to foster and maintain a strong safety culture.
  • Perform and/or coordinate plant monitoring activities (eg: noise chemicals etc.) necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory and company EHS requirements.
  • Oversee the facility incident investigation process to ensure incidents are reported in a timely manner investigations are conducted properly root causes are identified and corrective actions are tracked to closure.
  • Performs risk assessments and job safety analysis as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Safety Occupational Health Industrial Engineering or related field required; Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive EHS experience in a warehouse manufacturing or distribution setting.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA EPA and other regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience with ergonomic assessments risk mitigation strategies and cultural transformation initiatives.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills across all levels of an organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in food distribution food manufacturing or grocery environments.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of food safety standards such as HACCP FSMA GMPs and SQF.
  • Knowledge of food handling sanitation practices and cross-contamination prevention.
  • Ability to collaborate with food safety and quality assurance teams to align EHS and food safety goals.
  • Experience leading or supporting food safety audits or regulatory inspections (e.g. USDA FDA).
  • Familiarity with cold storage temperature control and safe warehouse practices related to perishable goods.
