Job Description

This position is located in Custer SD. Relocation or commute required.

Custer County Sheriffs Office is currently accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff. The role is ideal for dedicated law enforcement professionals who value community service teamwork and proactive policing in one of South Dakotas most scenic areas.

This position offers a starting wage of $25.43 per hour for non-certified Deputy Sheriff plus a $1.00 per hour shift differential for hours worked between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM. County benefits include paid holidays vacation (earned at 10 hours per month) sick leave (earned at 8 hours per month) employee health insurance with an option for a Health Savings Account SDRS retirement as well as dental vision and additional life insurance options. Deputies are assigned individual patrol vehicles and the department provides duty gear and uniforms.

Deputies are responsible for enforcing local and state laws preventing and suppressing crime and accidents serving legal processes promoting public safety through community policing and performing other duties as assigned. The Custer County Sheriffs Office also provides contract law enforcement for the City of Custer and contract patrols for the United States Forest Service.

Custer County spans over 1500 square miles and borders several South Dakota counties. It is home to landmarks such as the Crazy Horse Memorial Custer State Park Wind Cave National Park Jewel Cave National Monument the Black Hills National Forest and Buffalo Gap National Grassland.

Requirements:

  • Current South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission Certification

  • Must be at least 21 years of age

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Valid drivers license with an insurable driving history

  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation

  • No prior felony or simple assault domestic violence convictions

  • Availability to work all shifts including weekends and holidays
