Controller
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Full-Time
Location: Northampton MA
Schedule: Monday - Friday 9a-5p
Salary: $120000 - $130000 (Based on experience)

Position Summary
The Controller is a key member of the Fiscal leadership team and is responsible for directing all accounting operations including financial reporting internal controls budget support grants and contracts compliance and audit preparation. Reporting directly to the CFO the Controller plays a critical role in ensuring fiscal integrity transparency and efficiency within the agencys financial systems and processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger accounts payable accounts receivable payroll fixed assets and cash management.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and funder requirements.
  • Lead the annual audit process and coordinate with external auditors ensuring timely and clean audits.
  • Maintain a system of strong internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
  • Develop internal control guidelines policies and procedures for budgets accounting cash and credit management administration and other activities.
  • Guide financial decisions by establishing monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and develop accounting staff to support a high-performing finance team.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with financial policies regulatory requirements and government contracts (e.g. Medicaid Medicare federal/state/local grants).
  • Collaborate with program and development teams to manage grant and contract budgets reporting and compliance.
  • Assist the CFO in financial planning forecasting and strategic initiatives.
  • Drive process improvements and financial systems enhancements to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Oversee monthly and annual close processes to ensure accuracy and timelines.
Qualifications

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field (Masters degree and/or CPA preferred)
  • Minimum 7-10 of progressive accounting/finance experience with at least 3 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role.
  • Experience in a complex nonprofit healthcare or human services organization ideally with government funding and grant compliance.
Technical Skills:
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP nonprofit accounting standards and federal grant regulations (e.g. Uniform Guidance/OMB Circulars) taxes and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency in accounting software systems (e.g. Sage Intacct Great Plains or similar ERP systems).
  • Advanced Excel skills and data analysis capabilities.
  • Ability to deliver quality work on tight deadlines have strong organization and priority setting skills.
  • Working knowledge of payroll accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
Leadership & Communication:
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
