Job Description

Animal Transport Coordinator

Position Summary:

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (the GBHS) is a progressiveanimal welfare shelter whose mission is to rescue rehabilitate and rehomehomeless abused neglected and abandoned animals. We are committed to an openadmissions policy animal rehabilitation and a low euthanasia rate. GBHS openintake and adoption philosophy is a key part of our progressive missionenabling us to save and rehome thousands of animals each year.

The Animal Transport Coordinator is responsible for direct animal transport management and operations ofthe GBHS transport program aimed at maximizing animal placement and decreasingeuthanasia through safe and effective animal relocation. The Coordinator willmonitor all activities related to logistics scheduling track progress budgetmaintenance and continued outreach to increase partner shelters.

Duties:

  • Manage day-to-day activities of the transport team including setting schedules maintaining communication with transport team and partner shelters and ensuring compliance with USDA and State Laws for animal transport
  • Manage and execute all aspects of transport including: partner relationships animal readiness documentation proper transport vehicle oversight animal handling transport schedule routes emergency preparedness etc.
  • Coordinate the selection of behaviorally and medically fit animals for transport by communicating and collaborating with multiple departments and team members across locations
  • Organize all aspects of animal transport by communicating with shelter partners and giving adequate information onanimal breed behavior medical notes background and arrival times and dates
  • Ensure all animals selected for transport meet and maintain transport eligibility status by monitoring medical and behavioral health
  • Successfully recognize and communicate known medical and behavioral problems to shelter partners and/or rescues
  • Perform canine behavior assessments on all animals leaving for transport or as requested by destination shelters
  • Recognize disease symptoms and have understanding of animal diseases and transmissions to other animals to ensure safe handling and transport practices
  • Ensure animals have accurate records and all necessary requirements for transport based on State and shelter partner requirements including but not limited to: vaccines treatment and prevention for parasitic infestations heartworm tests etc.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and exceptional customer service when communicating with all shelter partners customers and volunteersand communicate organizational and program goals to the public volunteers and co-workers
  • Work with theFacilities department to make sure all vehicles and equipment are operational safe and provide a healthy environment for the animals being transported
  • Prepare vehicle for transport by selecting and loading appropriate crate sizes and clean and sanitize vehicle before and after each transport
  • Coordinate physical exams for transport by communicating with theChief Medical Officer and ensure that all transported animals have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI)
  • Responsible for securing and maintain inventory and supplies related to transport program
  • Effectively communicate with the Volunteer manager andutilize volunteers to support work of theprogram
  • Responsible for booking travel accommodations when needed
  • Research best practices industry standards and other information related to the work
  • Participate in strategic planning and maintain updated project information for reports and metrics
  • Work with an animal movement team to assist with animal pathing and placement strategies ensuring efficient humane relocation processes
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Know How

Experience with transports working with canines in an animal welfare setting and prior experience with animal behavior desired; Strong time management skills organizational skills problem-solving skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new software applications; High school education or GED equivalent; customer service experience and a basic understanding of animal welfare; Ability to work with little or no supervision Ability to handle animals in all conditions must possess excellent judgment and decision making skills; meets minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in GBHS employee handbook; ability to supervisor others as needed.


Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds with frequent lifting bending pushing and/or pulling; work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions; ability to work well in a team environment; ability to work weekends and evenings as necessary; meets minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in GBHS employee handbook. Ability to stoop bend lift clean mop and other such assigned duties with ease and in a timely fashion.


Work Environment

Must be able to work with and around animals of all types (cats dogs rabbits birds etc) that may be fearful under socialized feral and/or aggressive. Exposure to conditions such as animal feces urine etc and foul odors. May be exposed to animal dander parasites and infectious diseases than can be carried and transmitted by animals. Must be able to work in an environment that provides humane euthanasia to animals.
