Job Description

TITLE: After School Program Director

LOCATION: F.L. Schlagle High School

The Kansas City Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22000 students and 60 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools 28 elementary schools 7 middle schools and 5 college and career academies/high schools we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic 24% African American 9% White and 6% Asian. To serve our students the district employs approximately 4000 employees including more than 1800 teachers.

Job Goal:

The Director will be responsible for all day-to-day operations including sitemanagement and coordination of site personnel and service providers. The Director will oversee the entire program and make sure that activities meet the goals and objectives of the District.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain consistent communication with building administrators to create a positive and collaborative relationship that serves the best interests of all students
  • Assists/coaches collaborative teams
  • Supervising students
  • Assigning and supervising teachers for extra duty work or student supervision
  • Supervising and communicating with transportation
  • Ensure the academic program meets or exceeds yearly student outcome goals as defined by KCKPS and further measured in accordance with Kansas Department of Education requirements.
  • Supervise the development and implementation of appropriate standards to effectively encourage and monitor positive student behavior performance and attendance.
  • Enforce the districts Student Code of Conduct. Ensure that all disciplinary issues are addressed fairly and immediately.
  • Create a culture of excellence teamwork and collaboration amongst the staff teachers students and families.
  • Work with teachers to improve their teaching practice through coaching professional development modeling and collaborative planning.
  • Plan and supervise fire and tornado drills as required by law and district policy. This may also include coordinating additional safety plans for the staff students visitors and public at large for use within assigned building(s).
  • Supervise the maintenance of inventories of properties of the program
  • Continually monitor progress on all measures of school and staff performance through effective and consistent evaluations.
  • Administer KCKPS approved personnel policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement an effective orientation for new staff to the programs staff students community and facilities of the school building(s) assigned.
  • Coordinating activities with program providers including enrollment program needs evaluations staffing field trips etc.
  • Opening and closing the After School program unless indicated otherwise by school administrators.
  • Recruiting and enrolling families in the After School program
  • Communicate monthly with families students and community partners
  • Design (1) family engagement opportunity per quarter during school year and (1) during summer program
  • Attend monthly Advisory Council meetings and provide program updates
  • Recruiting staff for After School program
  • Maintain progress and evaluate the After School Program annually
  • Maintain ongoing community partnerships per grant requirements
  • Submit annual evaluation reports to KSDE as required by the grant
  • Completing and maintaining all necessary paperwork enrollment packets attendance records meal service weekly reports etc.
  • Maintaining active files on all participants in the program. Files should include; scheduled parental permission forms and emergency information.
  • Maintain certifications and training hours per Kansas Department of Health and Environment Regulations.
  • Respond and resolve parent concerns and/or complaints
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in education or related Social Services Field (preferred)
  • Teaching certification (preferred).
  • Supervision or administrative experience (preferred).
  • Ability to monitor progress of the grant through program activities.
  • Strong communication skills both written and oral.
  • Manage and supervise part-time staff.
  • Ability to interact in a positive manner with families students staff and community partners
  • Budget and accounting experience to manage payments for childcare fees.
  • Strong organizational skills.

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION:Maintains communication with school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Performs other related work as required.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators staff parents students and the general public.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit walk stand and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and depth perception.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students peers parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
