Job Description

We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in Bromley to assist with the appointment of a Highways Inspector on a 3-month contract highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay: 18.01 - 23.75 per hour

Summary:

The Highways Inspector plays a key role in maintaining the safety and condition of the boroughs highway network. This position involves conducting visual inspections identifying defects in highway assets ensuring timely repairs through contractors or utility companies and enforcing compliance with relevant legislation. The role requires strong communication and organisational skills along with a commitment to public service and highway safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct visual inspections of highway assets to identify defects and raise appropriate works orders or defect notices.
  • Respond to and resolve enquiries related to highway inspections in accordance with council policies and legislation.
  • Liaise with contractors and utility companies to monitor works process invoices and ensure standards are met.
  • Investigate public claims and complaints related to street conditions; provide evidence or statements for legal proceedings when necessary.
  • Enforce compliance under the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991 issuing defect notices as required.

Qualifications:

  • Accreditation under the NRSWA 1991 (or willingness to attain).
  • Accreditation under LANTRA Highway Safety Inspector training (or willingness to attain).

Requirements:
  • Demonstrable experience in highway maintenance and/or utility operations.
  • Experience managing interactions with members of the public contractors and elected officials.
  • Proven ability to adapt operational practices to statutory and business requirements.
  • A valid UK driving licence.
  • Familiarity with street care processes performance standards and quality management systems.
  • Understanding of highway and related legislation including contract and financial regulations.
  • Knowledge of performance indicators and service standards for highway maintenance.
