Job Description

Job Summary:

Position oversees the high schools athletic and activity programs in addition to working with youth programs. Assists the building principal with developing implementing and maintaining an exemplary high school student education and athletic program in conjunction with federal and state requirements and the districts mission goals and specific program requirements. Helps supervise and manage all aspects of a high school athletic and activity programs including business/fiscal scheduling coaching assignments and job performance co-curricular athletic/sports events and buildings and grounds maintenance. Assists with long-range strategic planning for athletic programs and facilities replacing/upgrading equipment and instructional materials and building/grounds preventive maintenance.

Requirements:

Current Oregon Teaching License. Ability to work with adolescents. Ability to work in a team and to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with staff students parents and community partners.

Qualities and Characteristics of the High School Assistant Principal/Athletic Director:

  • Understanding of and experience working with high school athletics and activities
  • Prior coaching experience at the high school level
  • Prior administrative or leadership experience at the high school level
  • The ability to create and sustain a school culture that nurtures high expectations a commitment to personal and academic excellence and fosters a growth mindset.
  • An optimistic energetic tenacious and dynamic perspective.

Responsibilities

The athletic director will work with the principal and other administrators focusing on key areas of school leadership: school culture student support and management family engagement and coaching staff quality.

The Athletic Directors responsibilities include:

Athletic/Activity Department Leadership

  • Oversee all NHS Athletic & Activity programs
  • Effectively recruit hire retain and develop qualified and passionate coaching staff.
  • Ensure a safe and orderly competitive environment including risk management and legal compliance associated with high school athletic and activity programs.
  • Collaborate effectively with league state and national associations.

School Leadership

  • Active member of Newberg High School Leadership Team working closely with Administrators to carry out the schools vision and mission
  • Consistently and relentlessly ensure the highest standards of quality for all aspects of the school.
  • Ensure all staff systems and programs are implemented effectively to achieve goals.
  • Collaborates to help develop and manage the events calendar.

Effective and Adaptive Management

  • Ensure all systems and programs are implemented effectively to achieve the goals and vision of the district.
  • Ensure a safe and orderly learning environment

Developing Welcoming & Engaging School Culture

  • Develop and foster a culture of quality continuous improvement personal responsibility and innovation that focuses on enhancing outcomes for every child.
  • Create a welcoming disciplined and joyful school culture with high standards of behavior and a culture of respect kindness and inclusion.

Ethical Leadership

  • Model principles of self-awareness reflective practice transparency and ethical behavior.
  • Works for equity and social justice by raising rigor for all while closing opportunity gaps.
  • Invites student voice and includes students in decision-making processes.

Family & Community Engagement

  • Ensure effective and excellent family communication engagement and outreach.
  • Ensure effective and excellent community partnerships with local businesses and service organizations.
  • Maintain welcoming and positive relations with families ensuring that families are involved supportive and included.
  • Consult with building and district leaders when making key decisions.
  • Advocate for students and families.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Language Skills:Ability to read English and comprehend complex technical language. Ability to write memoranda correspondence lessons plans reports and student achievement summaries in English. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations.

Mathematical Skills:Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy.

Reasoning Ability:Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed but basic written or oral instructions in English. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities:Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers supervisor(s) staff students parents and community.

Physical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to walk and may be continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50-75 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Works in a school environment. Able to use a telephone operate a computer and use other office equipment. Able to drive to other program sites and meetings.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and work year in accordance with negotiated agreement between licensed teachers and the district.

CLASSIFICATION:

Full-timeprobationaryposition at Newberg High School.

CALENDAR/BENEFITS:

Work Hours:

8 hours per day; Contract days and start date TBD based on upcoming licensed contract negotiations of 2025-2026 contract.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range TBD based on upcoming licensed contract negotiations of 2025-2026 contract. (2024-2025 salary range $48741 - $100225).Compensation also includes one Extra Duty Stipend per athletic season (Fall Winter Spring) at the A level on the Extra Duty Stipend Schedule.

Newberg Public Schools pays 6% PERS contribution eligible for health insurance benefits of other licensed educators in the district prorated at 85% of the maximum insurance benefit provides a generous insurance cap long-term disability and life insurance. Optional Life AD&D insurance Short Term Disability Tax Shelter Annuities Section 125 health and dependent care accounts Tuition Reimbursement Professional Development and Employee Assistance Program through Canopy are available to all staff.
