Expand your court experience or begin your legal career as a District Court Law Clerk!

In this position you will work directly with Judge Veena Iyer who is assigned to the felony criminal court rotation and chambered at the Ramsey County Courthouse at 15 W. Kellogg Blvd Saint Paul MN 55102. As Judge Iyers Law Clerk you will play a key role in ensuring promotion of the courts mission of providing justice through a system that assures equal access for the fair and timely resolution of cases and controversies.

In this role:
- You will develop expertise in court processes procedures and systems as you support the establishment of the chambers and management of the caseload;
- You will build relationships with the judge attorneys justice partners and court administration as you serve as an ambassador for the chambers;
- You will gain deeper experience in legal research analysis and writing as you prepare draft memoranda orders and opinions.

This position will require mostly in-person work but may also include occasional flexibility to work remotely.

Regular hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 - 4:30. This position will require the ability to work full-time during these hours. The anticipated start date for this position is the beginning of August 2024 but is negotiable.

Responsibilities
The following are examples of major job duties expected of this position.

  • Review study and research laws court decisions documents opinions briefs and related legal authorities.
  • Prepare proposed orders legal memoranda and jury instructions including appropriate suggestions or recommendations to the judge.
  • Compile information necessary for legal determinations.
  • Confer with judge concerning legal questions construction of documents and granting of orders.
  • Attend court sessions to hear oral arguments and record necessary case information; maintain records attendant to court proceedings.
  • Courtroom duties including taking court minutes calling the calendar swearing in jury panels and witness and assisting in various court proceedings such as arraignments motions hearings pre-trial conferences and trials.
  • Administrative duties as assigned including maintaining chambers operations corresponding with attorneys and filing on behalf of the court.

  • Law Clerk Graduation from an accredited law school at time of employment.
  • Law Clerk I- Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university and current enrollment in third year of a JD program (3L)

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent legal research and writing abilities.
  • Good computer skills including knowledge of Westlaw Microsoft Word and Zoom.
  • Ability to organize and manage own work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to handle a wide variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong sense of professionalism.
  • Ability to deal professionally and courteously with court personnel attorneys the public and media.
  • Access to a reliable internet connection is required if working remotely.

Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office setting courtroom or at a public counter. Work may involve contact with persons from the general public who may be agitated thus requiring the judicial law clerk to have the strong ability to manage ones own responses/emotions and work well with others in such situations.

Salary
The anticipated starting salary for a law school student (Law Clerk I) is $25.02-$26.33/hour based on qualifications and experience with opportunity for pay increase.

The anticipated starting salary for a law school graduate (Judicial Law Clerk) is $31.24-$34.93/hour based on qualifications and experience with opportunity for pay increase.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation and is eligible for State of Minnesota employee benefits.
