Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Children and Families the Policy Analyst will be responsible for conceptualizing researching policy issues analysis strategic policy development and drafting policy options and recommendations for an effective First Nations decision making process as it relates to First Nations Child Welfare.



Key Responsibilities

  • Research and contribute to policy development for the First Nations Family Advocate Office (FNFAO).
  • Understand the current provincial Child and Family Services landscape and its effects on First Nations children and families.
  • Network with departments within AMC and the FNFAO to determine needs concerns and viewpoints and to compile pertinent information.
  • Understand and be aware of provincial and federal government legislation and bills pertaining to First Nations and provide an analysis on its implications to First Nations.
  • Identify policy issues conduct research and prepare recommendations as it relates to government legislation and First Nations in the Child and Family Services system.
  • Produce high quality documentation including correspondence reports briefing notes and other documents.
  • Draft proposals and relevant budgets on behalf of the FNFAO.
  • Extract information from the FNFAO database system and apply statistical methods and techniques to develop analytical information.
  • Establish a trusting relationship with staff through clear communication and teamwork
  • Attend meetings and/or conferences as directed and report on each.
  • Prepare documentation for meetings and identify action items that pertain to the goals and objectives of the FNFAO.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education & Experience

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Work or a related discipline and/or a related equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods techniques and information to develop analytical frameworks.
  • Knowledge of First Nations research methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture history treaty and inherent rights.
  • Experience working with First Nations and First Nations organizations or entities.
  • Excellent verbal written inter-personal communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide analytical support while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office software Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Be able to follow office practices procedures and confidentiality.
  • Successful applicants must provide criminal record and child abuse registry checks.
  • Knowledge of First Nation people and communities.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and be able to travel upon request; and
  • Possess a valid drivers license and reliable vehicle.
