Job Description

THE CITY OF JACKSON IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: FIRE LIEUTENANT- INTERNAL POSTING

General Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Fire Captain has charge of and is responsible for an assigned fire company including firefighting/EMT personnel apparatus station and equipment. Responds to emergency incidents in the city and in surrounding communities. Assumes command until the arrival of a superior officer. Keeps proper records of incidents inspections assigned personnel supplies and other matters related to his assigned responsibilities.


Eligibility Requirements:
1. Lieutenants are expected to meet all minimum qualifications and requirements to work as a Fire Fighter including the Michigan state Fire fighter I and II certification.
2. Must be able to perform firefighting duties in extreme conditions wearing all personal protective equipment.
3. Must have a high school education or equivalent and four (4) years of continuous service as a Fire Fighter in the Jackson Fire Department.
4. Must have and maintain a valid Michigan drivers license and good driving record (6 points or fewer on driving record).
5. Must have and maintain a valid Michigan EMT certification.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand walk climb stairs bend and stoop sit use hands and fingers talk and hear drive a car and don and use personal protective equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus. The employee is occasionally required to climb ladders. The employee must be able to hold grip and use a variety of tools. The employee must be able to perform fire fighting duties while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment including assisting in stretching hose line raising group ladders using extrication equipment rescuing a victim removing an injured fire fighter and moving obstacles and debris. The employee must be able to collect evidence samples and move over obstacles. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision (including reading small print) peripheral vision depth perception distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.


While performing the duties of this job the employee frequently works indoors but also works outdoors including in extreme weather conditions and at fire scenes. The noise level for this work is usually quiet or moderate but is sometimes loud.
