Job Description

Primary Purpose:

To assist in the coordination and facilitation of the Head Start Health Services. To comply with all federal guidelines (Head Start Performance Standards Transmittal Notices etc.) and local Head Start policies in providing children and families with Head Start services.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification

  • Licensed RN Required
  • Travel Required

Skills

  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Must be able to demonstrate organizational skills empathy for those served and the ability to present new and effective ideas.
  • Requires moderate computer skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
  • Posture: Must be physically able to tolerate prolonged sitting frequent standing; occasional bending/stooping pushing/pulling twisting and standing
  • Motion: Must be physically able to tolerate frequent standing and walking repetitive hand motions frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching occasional driving
  • Lifting: Must be physically able to tolerate regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds or more)
  • Environment: Must be physically able to work inside; tolerate occasional regionwide and statewide travel; regular exposure to noise
  • Mental Demands: Must be able to work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours on occasion.
  • Regular Attendance is an essential function.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Works in the Head Start Health room and provides basic health care in case of injury or
acute illness.
2. Performs vision hearing lead and hemoglobin screenings for Head Start children and
appropriately refers children based on screening findings.
3. Provides observation examination and referral for Head Start children.
4. Completes health related logs reports notices forms care plans and records regarding
the health of Head Start children.
5. Assists Specialists and Family Services Assistants with scheduling medical and dental
follow-up for Head Start children and attends some medical appointments when
necessary.
6. Monitors the data management system to ensure that health services and sensory
screenings are completed within the time frame set forth by the Head Start Standards and
that children with abnormal results receive follow-up.
7. Prepares classroom medical plans of care with the parents input for children with
special needs and assists with implementation of the plan.
8. Travels to and visits assigned sites and classrooms including home-based settings for
child assessments screenings and record maintenance.
9. Assists in monitoring emergency medical care safety fire prevention and sanitation
measures for children and staff.
10. Plans and conducts parent and staff training in the areas of health nutrition medication
administration child development safety special health procedures and other areas as
needed according to the Head Start program.
11. Attends trainings conferences etc. and disseminates information received to families
and staff.
12. Assists with the restocking of the fanny packs first aid kits and classroom medical
supplies.
13. Works to connect enrolled children to a medical and dental home within 90 days of
enrollment.
14. Conducts coordination administration documentation and storage of medications and
related supplies and equipment for Head Start children and staff as assigned.

15. Teaches CPR and First Aid classes to Head Start/Early Head Start staff; maintains all
records of CPR and First Aid classes for the certifying agency.
16. Travels to teach CPR to Head Start partnerships as directed by the supervisor.
17. Documents all CPR and First Aid certifications in the data management system within 5
days of the certification class.
18. Collects and analyzes information to find new solutions to challenges as ongoing
monitoring and continual improvement in services.
19. Maintains licensure set forth by the requirements of the Texas State Board of Nursing.
20. Reports for work ready to perform responsibilities.
21. Performs duties that directly and/or indirectly impact student performance in region 16.
22. Maintains a professional level of confidentiality regarding all ESC matters.
23. Supports the mission goals and objectives of the ESC strategic plan.
24. Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the ESC safety program.
25. Performs professional responsibilities as required by ESC policies processes and
procedures.
26. Manages time calendar and job responsibilities to meet deadlines.
27. Meets proficiency levels of required technology skills as outlined by the supervisor.
28. Incorporates appropriate technology in daily work and exhibits continual growth in
technologies as outlined by supervisor.
29. Performs other duties as assigned.
