Job Description

Overview:

Brief Job Description:

The Director of Communications leads strategic communications for the Environment Energy and Open Space Cabinet including the Environment Department the Office of Climate Resilience the Office of Food Justice and the Office of Historic Preservation. Furthermore the Director collaborates with the External Affairs team at the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. The Director leads the development execution of a strategic communications vision that reinforces Bostons position as a leading City on climate action. Working closely with communications teams across cabinets and the Mayors Office the Director of Communications works to craft a narrative and communications strategy to support climate action including decarbonization resilience enhancing open space supporting sustainable food systems and preserving Bostons history.

The Director reports to the Chief Climate Officer and works closely with the Historic Preservation Food Justice Carbon Neutrality Community Engagement Environmental Quality and Energy teams to effectively communicate department policies and initiatives. This role requires strong collaboration with other City departments and active engagement with Bostons diverse communities to ensure inclusive transparent and impactful messaging.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads communications strategy and implementation in conjunction with EEOS Communications Managers and liaisons.
  • Serves as the Cabinets Public Information Officer and oversees all media relations for the EEOS Cabinet.
  • Collaborates with the Mayors Office on press releases and editorials and develops interview briefings media pitches stories and speechwriting.
  • Supports planning and organization of events and press conferences.
  • Works closely with staff throughout the Cabinet to coordinate and execute campaigns programs and events to further the Citys carbon neutrality resilience and environmental justice goals.
  • Partners with external affairs teams from advocacy institutional and business stakeholder organizations to support a comprehensive communications strategy.
  • Oversees all social media channels and adjusts strategy accordingly to the latest trends as well as overseeing the Cabinet newsletters and distribution.
  • Oversees all graphic and video content for social media and flyers for distribution that align with the Citys brand.
  • Oversees and leads website development for the Cabinets diverse initiatives.
  • Improves program efficacy by analyzing social media and traditional outreach metrics and adjusting content accordingly.
  • Supports other departments climate-related efforts including Green New Deal messaging recycling and compost programs Parks and Recreation active transportation etc.
  • Develops campaigns to reach critical sectors to maximize participation in the Citys sustainability programs.
  • Serves as the Language Access & Communications liaison to ensure accessible communications in the Citys most frequently spoken languages.
  • Seeks and organizes professional development opportunities related to Cabinet-wide communications strategies.
  • Acts as the liaison to the Public Records team and oversees public records requests for the Cabinet.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Five to seven (5-7) of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in environmental science or policy communications. or a related field.
  • A bachelors degree in a related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • A masters degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience.
  • Experience with all facets of media: print TV radio online blogs social media preferred.
  • Ability to think strategically and make innovative recommendations that drive Mayor Wus vision for climate action.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective engagement and communication strategies. Strong cross-cultural competencies awareness and commitment to diversity belonging inclusion and equity.
  • Demonstrated management of more than one full-time employee.
  • Experience with event planning is a plus.
  • Strong verbal written and presentation skills.
  • Strong program management performance management and social campaign analysis skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks. Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work with diverse interests and backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team energy creativity and entrepreneurship skills are a plus.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule in support of the positions responsibilities.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
