Under the direction of the Director of Nursing the House Supervisor is responsible for the total functioning of the patient care services during his/her respective shift. The House Supervisor will use professional knowledge organizational skills and problem-solving skills to make decisions with the goal of providing quality patient care and the best possible work environment for employees. The primary base of operation for the House Supervisor will be the Nursing Services. The managers are all accountable for their department and will be utilized as the first resource. The House Supervisor has the responsibility of making decisions for any given department in time of need/crisis.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives report from nursing staff at beginning of shift and provides a daily report at end of shift to administrative staff. Addresses personnel issues and enforces administrative policies. Ensures nursing staff adheres to the hospital policies and procedures and has authority for disciplinary action in collaboration with the Chief Nurse Executive/Department Managers. Maintains lines of communication with all Department Managers/Administration. Utilizes communication with Administration/Department Managers for issues that relate to their respective departments and areas of operational oversight responsibility. Assures assignment of patients for bed placement Reviews admissions for appropriateness-right status and time Ensures observation patients are reviewed and rolled to inpatient status or discharged based on IS/SI criteria and in consultation with involved physicians and nursing staff/Care Coordination. Makes nursing staffing decisions based on census and acuity utilizing productivity tools as a baseline guide. Maintains nursing schedule adjustment records and utilizes as needed in staffing decisions. Assists in the growth and development of nursing staff through mentoring/role modeling. Assists in the orientation of new nursing staff to their respective units and review of orientees needs/performance. Acts as a first contact for patient/family concerns or complaints needing immediate attention/intervention. Participates with Inpatient/employee rounding and callback initiatives of the organization. Participates in monthly call schedule. Seeks opportunities for enhancement of patient care by participating in Quality Improvement initiatives. Participates in periodic meetings with CNE/Department Managers to maintain accurate information flow and support of Performance Improvement activities of the organization.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Must have above average clinical knowledge of nursing. Must have knowledge of over-all organization and positions of nursing service in the organization. Knowledge of managing people and how to delegate Must be certified in BLS ACLS TNCC and PALS. Must possess clinical expertise good communication skills verbal and non-verbal. Must possess interpersonal skills.
MENTAL APPLICATION:
Must be able to make constant value judgements regarding patient care personnel and staffing. Must be able to formulate and interpret policies including patient care and human resource management. Must be able to assess a situation and make necessary decisions. Must be able to do short and long-range planning.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Must be licensed in Kentucky as a Registered Nurse. Bachelor degree preferred. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Fifty percent (50%) of the work time requires intermittent standing walking lifting pushing pulling balancing stooping kneeling crouching reaching and carrying. The actual amount of each individual activity is dependent on many factors which include but is not limited to patients height and weight physical condition and ability to assist with the care that is being provided activity order which allows them to assist and the amount of assistance available at the time.
FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to work closely with people in routine activities and in crisis situations. Tolerance of stressful situations. Ability to function independently as well as a leader or member of a team. Tolerance of changing job demands that may acutely change/increase stress levels. Position requires frequent days in excess of eight (8) hours with frequent interruptions. Limited exposure to communicable disease by virtue of health care facility. Position requires corrected vision hearing the use of two hands the use of two feet extensive sitting standing walking bending stooping kneeling twisting reaching lifting and pushing. Ability to hear and speak in a clear concise voice. Position requires the employee to be free of all unlawful substances and alcohol; and requires the employee to report the use of lawful substances to the Administrator.
