GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the supervision of the Dispatch Coordinator the dispatcher helps ensure the proper functioning of transportation operations by assuring that all bus routes are staffed and that daily operations run efficiently and with minimal disruption.
MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Dispatch Responsibilities
- Ensures that all bus routes have buses and drivers assigned and helps ensure the smooth functioning of daily transportation operations.
- Maintains communication with drivers via two-way radio and assists with breakdowns accidents route changes and other emergencies.
- Communicates effectively and provides assistance to schools and constituents regarding daily transportation operations.
- Maintains records of absence coverage spare buses bus breakdowns and schedule information.
- Assists in resolving situations involving questions and complaints equipment failure and route changes.
- Prepares and submits accident notification information and calls appropriate personnel when an accident occurs.
- Utilizes computer-guided routing software to provide guidance to drivers in the field and formulate route changes due to traffic accidents or road construction.
- Willing to work flexible hours when other dispatchers are absent or to support special work assignments.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or its equivalent.
- Prior experience as a dispatcher and/or school bus driver preferred.
- Possession or ability to obtain within six months of employment a Commercial Drivers License with a school bus certification valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia preferred.

- Knowledge
- School bus transportation and operation processes and systems.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of bus routes and surrounding geographic areas in Stafford County for efficient routing.
- Skills
- Communicate effectively and efficiently both orally and written to maintain courteous and tactful communication between parents school administrators students the general public drivers and assistants.
- Operation of business equipment to include fax machine copier two way radio and multiple line phone system.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work environment is primarily inside with low to moderate noise temperatures that are primarily controlled and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
- The work is light to moderate work requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to move or lift objects
