The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 3 (Statewide Resource Development Biologist) located in Juneau!


What you will be doing:

This position is a permanent full-time Fishery Biologist 3 who works as part of a team that helps permit monitor plan and provides technical assistance to the Private Non-Profit (PNP) fisheries program aquatic farm operations (oysters kelp etc.) and aquatic resource permits for marine research and propagation. This position is unique in that it will be active in both programs while other members of the team are more focused on one program or the other.

This position plays a vital role in the Division of Commercial Fisheries Aquaculture Section. The section has statewide oversite of Alaskas PNP enhancement program and aquatic farm operations. This position works closely with operators and State staff; receives and analyzes data; reviews permit applications; compiles reports with recommendations; and acts as a source of information for the public and department staff.

This position operates between two equal positions that are dedicated to the PNP hatchery program and to aquatic farming plus aquatic resource permits for marine research and propagation. The section values collaboration communication flexibility and creativity to work in the best interest of the public. The job is office based with work schedules flexible upon approval.


The working conditions you can expect:

The workstation is in the Juneau Headquarters Office. The position is primarily computer oriented in a single desk cubical space. Work hours are mostly a standard union approved work week with some non-traditional work hours on occasion. Travel will be required for meetings and possibly site inspections.


Who we are looking for:

The Aquaculture Section requires a detail-oriented and committed professional with the following knowledge skills and abilities. If you have experience with the following please document them on your application:

  • Technical understanding of the principles and practices utilized in PNP hatchery and aquatic farm operations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills - must be able to write and speak clearly and succinctly and communicate complex issues to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to run a meeting in person and virtually. This includes the ability to navigate discussions with strong opposing views and summarize the outcome without biasing views.
  • Problem solver with ability to work with limited supervision. The ideal candidate must be able to manage their time effectively and ensure tasks are completed accurately and on time. Must have a willingness and ability to readily respond to changing circumstances and priorities.
  • Must be able to professionally interact with people from diverse scientific technical and professional backgrounds establish good working relationships and work effectively as part of a team.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelors degree from an accredited college in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry fisheries science or natural resource management;

AND

One year of full performance professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2 Fish Culturist 2 Wildlife Biologist 2 Habitat Biologist 2 or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

A bachelors degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry aquaculture aquatic ecology fisheries resources or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques human population dynamics or the design and manipulation of landscapes) of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry physics mathematics statistics geology hydrology or GIS.

Special Note:

Upper division courses means courses that are specialized in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving analytical thinking skills and theoretical applications with depth and rigor in a disciplines theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics microscopic analysis underwater research or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
