What Youll Do

  • Provides engineering support for materials and component testing and examination activities including development of examination and testing methodologies and procuring and maintaining required equipment and facilities.
  • Provides technical expertise for test and inspection operational support budget preparation procedure development training and analysis of job hazards.
  • Provides technical support for a variety of nondestructive and destructive examination processes including mechanical testing digital microscopy ultrasonic and dynamic testing techniques.
  • Develops material evaluation specifications involving laboratory processes and techniques such as metallography mechanical testing and failure analysis.
  • Manages projects periodically to plan and implement new test processes and equipment upgrades.
  • Provides engineering support for new process design facility alterations and modifications new equipment installation and environmental and safety concerns.
  • Provides and maintains design specification procurement requirements certification and traceability of test equipment and instruments.
  • Participates in operational safety reviews to analyze hazards associated with testing and examination activities. Identifies engineering and/or administrative controls necessary to protect workers from the identified hazards.
  • Prepares safety and administrative documentation required to obtain the necessary authorization to perform new or revised testing and examination operations.
  • Assigned activities require daily access to numerous nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in engineering/science discipline with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a Masters degree in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a PhD in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
  • There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
  • In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of manufacturing and Y-12 organizational policies configuration and document control procedures and Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS).
  • Knowledge of a range of principles theories professional competencies work methods and knowledge of other job specialties and functions.
  • Interacts with senior management and externally to achieve organizational goals.
  • Exercises significant supervision and provides leadership through expert knowledge or management.
  • Interacts with senior business professionals senior technical staff and senior management to address complex business issues and problems.
  • Significant experience applying and demonstrating competencies to lead technical projects.
  • Experience with laboratory processes and techniques such as metallography mechanical testing and failure analysis.
  • Must be able to clearly express and document technical issues using Microsoft Office or other software packages.
  • Must be a self starter and able to work with all levels of personnel ranging from craft to Design Agency staff.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712) which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

This position may be categorized as a designated position identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709 requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
