The School of Physics is one of the leading Physics schools in Australia. It offers a world class undergraduate physics degree as well as a postgraduate PhD research program for over 50 students. 33 academic staff conduct theoretical and experimental research in quantum physics astrophysics fundamental physics; and condensed matter physics.

The Production Manager (Electronic Device Development) plays a lead role within the Faculty of Science and School of Physics in the planning development and implementation of the UBIQUT ASIC defence trailblazer project and in particular ensuring delivery of a prototype field-deployable quantum sensing device.

The role entails developing project planning documentation identifying and building appropriate project teams and initiating and overseeing the project including managing all stakeholder engagement and quality assurance. It also entails taking day-to-day technical leadership in delivery of a prototype sensor.

About the role

  • Level 8 ($127k $143k) - plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term 15 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to Professor Dane McCamey supporting the Faculty of Science/School of Physics and has one direct report.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Oversee and manage the delivery of the UBIQUT ASIC defence trailblazer project and initiatives to achieve operational and strategic goals.
  • Undertake day-to-day project management including the development the delivery and the evaluation including input into project planning and documentation.
  • Manage project dependencies risks issues change requests and financials and work with the project team to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place.
  • Manage adherence to UNSW governance pathways to ensure projects are managed within a defined consistent and proven set of rules for project development and implementation.
  • Partner with the Project Team and key stakeholders to monitor and report on progress of projects; and identify problems and propose possible solutions.
  • Oversee and finalise effective communications with key stakeholders both internal and external to the project.
  • Lead the development of key specifications for the successful implementation of an out-of-lab quantum magnetometer based on an organic light-emitting diode (OLED).
  • Undertake and oversee the design and implementation of an out-of-lab quantum magnetometer based on OLEDs.
  • Supervise and lead the field testing and benchmarking of a prototype OLED quantum magnetometer.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks projects and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.

About the successful applicant:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in electrical engineering or physics with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education training and experience.
  • Proven project management experience with an in-depth understanding of the project life cycle and strategic development of project plans objectives and documentation and demonstrated experience in delivering product development outcomes.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures.
  • High level of experience working with a range of computer systems and applications including microwave/microelectronics and low-level software languages such as C/C and/or FPGA hardware design languages.
  • Excellent time management skills with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSWs aims objectives and values in action together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
