Responsibilities

As a regional cancer registrar for Dignity Health facilities in Arizona the incumbent is responsible for the identification collection abstracting coding staging and follow-up of cancer cases diagnosed and/or treated at these facilities. This position ensures the accuracy completeness and timeliness of cancer data to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements. The cancer registrar is responsible for maintaining cancer registry components in accordance with state law as detailed in the Arizona State Cancer Incidence Act.

  • Identifies potential cancer cases through a variety of sources including but not limited to: pathology reports radiology reports surgery schedules admission/discharge lists and other relevant medical records.
  • Reviews electronic medical records to confirm cancer diagnoses and determine eligibility for inclusion in the cancer registry.
  • Knowledgeable of the cancer disease processes (benign and malignant) diagnostic methods and procedures and treatment methods.
  • Abstracts pertinent information from medical records including patient demographics medical history diagnostic findings treatment modalities and follow-up accurate codes for primary site histology grade and stage of cancer using established coding systems (e.g. ICD-O-3 SEER Site/Histology and Store Coding Manual).Applies appropriate staging systems (e.g. AJCC TNM Staging SEER Summary Staging) to determine the extent of disease.
  • Maintains current knowledge of coding and staging guidelines and updates.
  • Accurately and completely enters abstracted data into the Cnext Rocky Mountain or Metriq cancer registry database.
  • Ensures compliance with cancer registry standards and guidelines. Follows all abstracting guidelines of the Arizona Cancer Registry (NPCR) and SEER to abstract and report eligible cases within 180 days of date of first contact.
  • Follows the productivity guidelines of the registry office by abstracting a case in 90 minutes (average).

Required: Certified as a Tumor Registrar (CT CTR)

Qualifications

MINIMUM

High School Diploma or GED and (4) four years experience in multi-EMR applications and ability to capture needed information from all sources with course work in and/or experience using anatomy and physiology
and medical terminology cancer disease process and cancer treatment methods

or

Associates degree from an approved program for Certified Oncology Data Specialist and (1) one year recent abstracting experience in a cancer registry

Through knowledge of cancer registry processes and procedures.

Strong understanding of cancer diagnosis treatment and prognosis.
Excellent abstracting skills and attention to detail.

Ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a remote environment.

Microsoft Word Excel Google Workspace Registry Software System within 60 Days of hire

Required: Certified as a Tumor Registrar (CT CTR)
