Reporting to the Housing Manager the Custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness in The Mustard Seeds property. The Custodian is a member of a team committed to providing excellent services in a secure and healthy living environment to tenants in a Supportive and Affordable Housing setting in accordance with industry best practices and The Mustard Seed policies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Clean and maintain a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness in The Mustard Seeds housing common areas and offices
• Sweep vacuum and mop floors
• Clean walls windows and other surfaces
• Disinfect and sanitize bathroom floors walls counters sinks toilets and urinals
• Collect and dispose of refuse in and around premises
• Respond to and address cleaning emergencies such as spills or accidents
• Complete duties in common areas in the presence of community participants and tenants
• Inspect premises and ensure compliance with Health and Safety standards
• Ensure tidiness and professionalism in all aspects of daily work
• Abide by all Health and Safety protocols including but not limited to reporting incidents near misses and hazards in a timely manner
• Participate in all staff training such as First Aid Naloxone NVCI training to be fully equipped to work with the guests and clients etc. and attend meetings as required
• Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

• Minimum 2 years of janitorial work experience
• Desire to learn new skills
• Organized self-directed and proactive
• Strong work ethic and naturally takes initiative
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Strong conflict resolution skills and ability to de-escalate situations while remaining calm and professional
• Ability to work with minimal direction/supervision and perform effectively with team members
• Knowledge of WHIMIS and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is an asset
• Ability to adhere to Health and Safety regulations and policies
• Ability to lift 20 - 50lbs repeatedly and work a physically active job for 4 or more hours a day
• Capacity to handle difficult and stressful situations in a professional manner
• Willingness to be coached and openness to feedback
• Ability to present and punctual on a routine basis
• Ability to exhibit professionalism in all aspects of daily work

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Position requires frequent manual labor and working alone at times
• Role is often fast paced with periods of high-volume workload
• Steel toe shoes are required protective footwear must be worn at all times regardless of the presence of a hazard
• Work will be performed indoors and outdoors
• Other duties and work at various sites may be required
• Moderate to considerable physical effort including reaching walking lifting climbing stairs and extended periods of standing
• Moderate to significant mental effort: conflict resolution and organizational ability required
• Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may be in a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.

• Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments
