Job Description

Erickson Elementary is looking for a 0.3 FTE (term) Teacher Librarian to join their high functioning team. This position is due to a leave.

Position Summary

The Teacher Librarian plays a vital role in fostering a dynamic inclusive informed and future-oriented learning environment. As experts in information technologies literacy development and curriculum integration Teacher Librarians manage the Library Learning Commons (LLC) and support the academic and personal growth of all students. This role requires collaboration with teachers and district staff to promote inquiry-based learning digital and information literacy and lifelong learning.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Promote the Teacher Librarian and LLC as essential to student learning and success.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to co-plan co-teach and evaluate instruction.
  • Support the integration of information and digital technologies into all curricular areas.
  • Lead and coordinate school literacy initiatives programs and events.
  • Supervise students in support blocks IDS blocks etc in the library.
  • Build collaborative relationships with students staff families and the wider educational community.

Instruction and Literacy Development

  • Teach information literacy media literacy and digital citizenship.
  • Design and implement instructional programs that encourage inquiry independent research and critical thinking.
  • Support students in developing the skills to locate analyze evaluate and apply information across a range of media databases and formats.
  • Promote reading information acquisition and literacy across all grade levels and subject areas.

Library Learning Commons (LLC)

  • Day-to-day operations of the library including resource circulation and student use.
  • Develop and maintain a diverse current and culturally responsive collection aligned with curricular goals and student interests.
  • Provide leadership in the use of emerging information technologies including education about the ethical use of AI tools (eg: Microsoft Co-Pilot).
  • Provide leadership in the ethical collection and use of information including education about plagiarism and academic integrity.

Equity and Accessibility

  • Ensure equitable access to resources and services for all learners including students with accessibility needs diverse abilities and diverse backgrounds.
  • Select and promote inclusive materials that reflect a wide range of voices cultures perspectives and experiences.
  • Create learning environments that accommodate various learning styles and needs.
  • Provide leadership in accessible document acquisition and remediation to support the provision of accessible information

Professional Learning

  • Stay current with best practices in library science instructional design and educational technology.
  • Lead or participate in professional learning communities at the school and district levels library commons literacy etc.
  • Support colleagues in resource selection copyright and digital learning tools.
  • Support Independent Directed Studies (IDS) and inquiry programs across subject areas.

Qualifications

Minimum Required

  • Bachelor of Education Degree (or equivalent) with a concentration in a field related to literacy educational technology media in education inclusive education or similar.
  • Valid B.C. Teaching Certificate.
  • Completion of 5 senior-level (300-level or higher) Teacher-Librarian courses.
  • A minimum of five years of satisfactory classroom teaching experience.

Preferred

  • Diploma or Masters degree in Teacher-Librarianship Library Studies or a related field.
  • Experience managing school libraries or LLCs including budget and resource planning.

Professional Competencies

  • Strong understanding of information and digital literacy inquiry-based learning and equitable access to learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to design engaging inclusive and effective learning experiences.
  • Proficiency with digital tools and platforms (e.g. Microsoft tools Google Classroom Co-Pilot ERAC MyBlueprint L4U).
  • Effective facilitation of positive learning environments.
  • Knowledge of copyright site licensing and privacy laws (e.g. FIPPA/FOIPPA) as they apply to education.
