JOB SUMMARY

The Bus Driver Trainer provides comprehensive training to school bus driver applicants and current drivers through both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training sessions. This position ensures that all drivers are knowledgeable and compliant with district state and federal transportation regulations and safety standards. The trainer assesses training needs reinforces safe driving practices and prepares drivers for state certification. Additionally the Bus Driver Trainer maintains accurate and up-to-date training records and documentation to meet audit and regulatory requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Valid Utah Drivers License and evidence of insurability
  3. Must be 21 years of age or older
  4. Have or obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) and Defensive Driving Instructors Certificate within 60 days of hire
  5. Hold or obtain a CPR & First Aid Certificate within six months of hire
  6. Ability to pass the Physical Assessment Standards for Utah School Bus Drivers
  7. Able to roll push pull bend reach stoop and lift up to 50 pounds
  8. Speak read write analyze and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

These are examples of skills and experience that the best-qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.

  1. Knowledge of pertinent transportation codes and policies
  2. Experience in a K-12 education or public employment environment
  3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct classroom and behind-the-wheel training for drivers and driver applicants to present reinforce and develop bus driver skills and provide job knowledge required to meet district state and federal requirements
  2. Evaluate performance of bus drivers and driver applicants (e.g. spot checks student management techniques safety issues etc.) to ensure that basic skill levels are met and that all drivers are performing in a safe and courteous manner and in compliance with state certification requirements
  3. Monitor bus driver licensing training requirements and certificate status (e.g drivers licenses physicals drug screenings CPR/First Aid etc.) to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  4. Conduct semi-annual bus evacuation training to ensure drivers perform required drills correctly
  5. Coordinate safety training within the transportation department
  6. Perform functions of a Bus Driver to meet student transportation needs
  7. Schedule training and testing of non-district personnel to ensure compliance with district policies and established regulatory requirements
  8. Prepare a wide variety of reports documents and correspondence of a confidential and non-confidential nature (e.g. letters memorandums meeting minutes periodic and ad-hoc reports for department district and state etc.)
  9. Review documents and reports (e.g. federal state standards and district policy reports etc.) to determine topics for training and/or being updated on federal state and district guidelines
  10. Maintain a wide variety of manual and electronic documents files and records (e.g. budget data employee records financial records etc.) to provide up-to-date information completion of processes and historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements
  11. Participate in meetings workshops and seminars as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions
  12. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  13. Represent the department in a professional manner using workplace etiquette
  14. Work under limited supervision use time-management and prioritization strategies adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions to meet deadlines
  15. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position
  16. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  17. As needed roll push pull bend reach stoop kneel crouch crawl and lift up to 50 pounds
  18. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective function of the work unit

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: some lifting up to 50 pounds carrying pushing and/or pulling some stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 34% sitting 33% walking and 33% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
