Job Description

The Library Media Specialist (LMS) supports staff and students by instilling a love of reading and literature. The LMS is an Ambassador of Libraries educating students about all aspects of libraries and the resources that are available to them. The ultimate goal is to empower students and staff to be effective users and creators of information and learning to successfully navigate the information multiverse. This includes the use of technology and learning to evaluate the sources of information both in print and online. The LMS will support staff and curriculum seeking to collaborate whenever possible marrying the standards for the classroom and the Library. The LMS will follow the current statewide RI School Library Curriculum ( and work to weave this curriculum into lessons which will complement the classroom curriculum. The LMS will be assigned to West Kingston Elementary Peace Dale Elementary and Matunuck Elementary Schools. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Aligning the School Library Program with the mission goals and objective of the school/school district. Curating library collection with an emphasis on both supporting curriculum but also including popular childrens books in order to foster love of reading including both print and ebooks. Instruction of students in the use of libraries digital citizenship and technology. Being a resource for staff in technology and encouraging the use of the most up-to-date technology tools in their instruction. Promoting reading and literacy in as many ways as possible including devising special events and/or ongoing programs which are exciting to students and seek to increase their enjoyment and involvement in includes collaboration with other district librarians to craft summer reading lists and coordinate efforts at a district level. (ex. 4th Grade Battle of the Books). Working with district librarians to craft and keep updated district-wide library Policies and Procedures. Providing differentiated learning experiences that allow all students to participate and grow. Developing well-structured lessons that include measurable objectives including periodic design and administration of informal and/or formal assessments to promote leisure students growth toward local/state standards. Using rituals and routines that create and maintain a safe learning environment. Promoting the ethical use of information including copyright fair use and licensing of intellectual property among both students and staff. Designing and administering periodic measurement tools to gauge students degree of understanding of key library media concepts and competencies. Promoting school libraries whenever possible with PR efforts in the district and community. This includes management of parent library volunteers and prompt and courteous communication with families preferably on an ongoing basis such as periodic newsletters and updates from the library. Working with RILINK and staying abreast of current statewide practices in school libraries. Fosters a creative and flexible environment so that the library is embraced as a collaborative and essential part of the learning community. Consistently fostering lessons and experiences that encourage students to respect and appreciate differences.
