The Position:
The Upper School program at Havergal College isdistinguished by opportunities for students to develop and learn in a diversestimulating and supportive environment. Teaching facilities are well-equippedand offer bright technology-rich environments.
ExperiencedIntermediate/Senior teachers at Havergal College are confident in curriculumdevelopment and demonstrate an approach to teaching that reflects how girlslearn. They support all learners with diverse strategies and approaches and arewilling and able to use appropriate solutions to learning challengesexperienced by students. Teachers optimize the use of the technology to supportstudent learning. Classes are engaging and dynamic; teachers genuinely enjoytheir work and are approachable available knowledgeable genuine andsupportive.
As members of the Upper School faculty teachers engage in the work of theUpper School in a collegial and supportive manner. They demonstrate anunderstanding of the importance of parents as partners in their daughterseducation by maintaining open and collaborative relationships with parents. Specific Accountabilities:
- Collaboratewith the English teaching team to continuously enhance the program in waysinformed by evidence-based practice committed to vertical alignment and witha spirit of collegiality.
- Collaboratewith the English teaching team to continuously enhance the curriculum toreflect multiple and intersectional identities including texts and charactersof historically marginalized communities to offer students both mirrors andwindows for discovery.
- Deliverengaging and dynamic classes built on a foundation of ongoing professionaldevelopment.
- Demonstratean understanding of the importance of parents as partners in their childseducation by maintaining open and collaborative relationships with the parentcommunity.
- Demonstrateenergy commitment and a readiness to participate in the co-curricular programand the diverse life of the school community.
Planning and Preparation of Learning
- Understand how to use knowledgeof student developmental stages and current educational research to makeappropriate and thoughtful instructional decisions in teaching English.
- Work in collaboration with theUpper School Department Head to develop content knowledge and to deliver aconsistent aligned and rigorous program of study.
- Develop effective lesson plansthat demonstrate the principles of a teaching for understanding framework andreflect the Ontario curriculum expectations.
- Demonstrate an understanding ofassessment principles reflective of current assessment practices.
- Work in collaboration with otherfaculty.
- Model best practices usingtechnology in the classroom to help support the curriculum and studentsdevelopmental stages.
Setting theLearning Environment
- Demonstrate compassionacceptance insight and interest in developing students potential andcapacity.
- Model the schools valuesthrough actions and words when dealing with students parents and other adultsin the school.
- Demonstrate an understanding thatstudents learn through active intellectual engagement.
- Create a trusting learningenvironment for students by acting consistently fairly openly and honestlyand having clear expectations for all students.
- Ensure appropriate behaviour inthe classroom and on school property.
- Create a learning environmentwhere student thinking is visible valued and part of their everydayexperiences.
- Create a safe and engaginglearning space reflective of the developmental needs of students.
InstructionalPractices
- Ensure instructional practicesreflect advanced planning and preparation and the available time.
- Ensure that questions andinstructional strategies help promote student thinking and extend theirunderstanding knowledge and skills.
- Use relevant pedagogyassessment and evaluation resources and technology in planning for andresponding to students needs.
- Ensure student learning isappropriately documented and reported.
ProfessionalResponsibilities
- Uphold the professional andethical standards of practice defined by the Ontario College of Teachers.
- Actively participate inprofessional growth activities (membership in professional learningcommunities completing professional reading setting professional learninggoals).
- Maintain consistentprofessional supporting and encouraging relationships with colleagues.
- Ensure compliance with allschool policies and practices and maintain all required documentation.
- Maintain an open line ofcommunication with parents and work with them as partners in their daughterseducational journey.
- Actively participate in the lifeof the school outside of the classroom.
Qualifications Knowledge andExperience
- Relevant universityqualifications at the Bachelor level (e.g. Bachelor of Arts (English) orequivalent) including a Bachelor of Education/Master of Teaching degree withIntermediate/Senior qualifications in English.
- Relevant qualifications in Dramaare also an asset.
- Certification from the OntarioCollege of Teachers and a member in Good Standing.
- Relevant teaching experiencewithin a classroom setting.
- A comprehensive understanding ofcurrent educational practices in curriculum planning implementationassessment and instructional strategies.
- Understanding of how to applythe current research on girls and learning.
- Knowledge of differing learningneeds and strategies for supporting all kinds of learners.
- A commitment toward continuedprofessional development and growth.
- Strong interpersonalorganizational time-management and communication skills.
- Self-starter able to work in aself-directed manner appropriate to changing needs.
- A proven commitment to workingsuccessfully in collaborative environments.
- Experience in an independentschool is an asset.
- Energy commitment and areadiness to participate in the co-curricular program and the diverse life ofthe school community.
