JOB DESCRIPTION: Suspended/Expelled Student Support Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • The Suspended/Expelled Student Support Specialist is responsible for providing targeted academic behavioral and social-emotional support to students who have been suspended or expelled from school. This position works closely with students families school staff and community partners to ensure continued access to educational services foster personal growth and support successful reintegration into the school environment. The specialist develops individualized support plans monitors student progress and connects students and families with resources to address barriers to success. The role is focused on promoting equity reducing recidivism and helping students remain engaged in their education during and after disciplinary removals.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Suspended/Expelled Student Support Specialist:

  1. Coordinates academic instruction for suspended or expelled students in alignment with district curriculum. *
  2. Monitors student progress and collaborates with teachers to ensure appropriate assignments and materials are provided. *
  3. Facilitates access to online learning platforms tutoring or alternative instructional services. *
  4. Develops and implements individualized support plans focused on academic behavioral and social-emotional needs. *
  5. Conducts intake meetings with students and families to assess needs set goals and establish expectations. *
  6. Maintains detailed records of student engagement progress and intervention outcomes. *
  7. Teaches and reinforces positive behavior strategies conflict resolution skills and emotional regulation techniques. *
  8. Serves as a liaison with mental health providers counselors and other support staff. *
  9. Develops transition plans to support students returning to their home school or other placement. *
  10. Collaborates with school teams administrators and families to ensure smooth reintegration and monitors post-transition success by providing ongoing support as needed. *
  11. Maintains regular communication with parents/guardians and connects families with community resources related to mental health housing employment or other supports. *
  12. Works closely with school administrators counselors special education staff and behavior teams and participates in multidisciplinary team meetings (e.g. IEPs MTSS reentry planning). *
  13. Works closely with Cathedral Home Laramie Youth Crisis Center in support of students and families. *
  14. Ensures all services comply with state and federal educations laws tracks student attendance and progress and prepares reports/documentation for district leadership families and relevant caregivers. *
  15. Follows the policies and procedures of the school and the District. *
  16. Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility such as demonstrating ethical behavior; providing accurate data and reports when needed; meeting deadlines; maintaining confidentiality; caring for the equipment and materials; and dressing appropriately and presenting a good role model. *
  17. Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to use effective communication skills; ability to use time effectively; good organizational skills; ability to maintain a positive relationship with other staff by collaborating and working cooperatively with them (including supervisors); ability to operate standard office equipment and software applications; ability to prepare and maintain accurate records; knowledge of instructional techniques; knowledge of safety practices and procedures; knowledge of conflict resolution; knowledge of child development/behavior; ability to maintain a clam demeanor; ability to maintain confidentiality; and ability to meet deadlines and schedules.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

Mandatory: Minimum of a bachelors degree in social work counseling psychology or education.

Preferred: Extensive experience with at-risk youth and a teaching certification.

- Additional Work Conditions and Physical Abilities: Requires travel to multiple sites.

EVALUATION

- Evaluation of this position shall be by the Chief Student Advocacy Officer.
