The Assistant Disciplinary Counsel (ADC) investigates and prosecutes allegations of attorney misconduct and reinstatement petitions from initial investigation through hearings and appeals. The ADC reports to the Deputy Disciplinary Counsel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Investigate allegations of attorney misconduct by interviewing witnesses issuing subpoenas reviewing documents and court filings and conducting legal research and analysis.
- Draft letters and memoranda of factual findings and recommendations for appropriatecasedisposition.
- RepresenttheODCinformal administrative proceedingsbeforehearingcommitteesincludingdeveloping case presentation strategy drafting pleadings presenting documentary evidence at administrative hearings examining witnesses and where appropriate negotiating with respondent attorneys to resolve matters.
- Prepare post-hearing and appellate briefs and deliver oral arguments before the Board on Professional Responsibility and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
- Prepare and present ethics and attorney discipline-related programs for continuing legal education.
- Participate in legal staff meeting discussions and mootcourts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Member in good standing of the DC Bar or eligible to waive into the DC Bar.
- Demonstrated trial advocacy and courtroom skills.
- Ability to identify factual and legal issues; collect interpret and analyze large volumes of data; and establish facts draw valid conclusions and develop alternative solutions.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Workwellinateamenvironmentandinteractprofessionallywithstaff witnesses opposing counsel hearing committee and Board members the courts government and other attorney discipline agencies and the public.
- Successfullywork in a fast-paced environment and consistently manage competing priorities to meet deadlines.
- Must work well under pressure possess excellent time-management and organization abilities successfully manage daily tasks and work with minimal supervision.
- Mustbeadaptable creative detail-oriented deadline-driven and self-motivated.
- ProficientinMicrosoft 365 Adobe Pro and online legal research.
- Abilitytohandleandmaintaintheconfidentialityofhighlysensitiveinformation.
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Relevant litigation experience.
This is a hybrid position with days worked in the office and days worked remotely. The hybrid status of this position maychange at any time subject to the ODCs discretion.
