About the opportunity

The Ecology and Biodiversity Centre is looking for a passionate and experienced Technical Officer to join their team.

As our new Technical Officer you will primarily provide science support for giant kelp restoration efforts and augmentation activities within the Coastal Ecosystems Team. This will include assisting field surveys and kelp seedling deployments while diving on compressed gases.

You will also be required to support diving operations to conduct follow-up surveys of reef conditions after remedial reef repair works plus ensure compliance with WH&S requirements.

A significant component of the position will involve participating in large sub-tidal survey efforts at wave exposed sites including in situ data collection.

As well as field work you will also assist in data entry data management and preliminary analysis and will help with the preparation of project data for analysis (for presentation in publications and at stakeholder engagement meetings).

What youll do:

  • Provide high-level field support to Chief Investigator and researchers in the Ecology & Biodiversity Centre.
  • Conduct field sampling including dive surveys giant kelp out-planting including monitoring of growth and survival. plus preparation and maintenance of field gear.
  • Responsible for assisting the fabrication and installation of marine research equipment.
  • Assist research staff and associated students in conducting research projects within the Ecology & Biodiversity Centre.
  • Assist with collection preparation quality control/ quality assurance and management of field data relating to science questions and WHS approvals and reporting.

What were looking for:

  • A degree in a relevant field for example marine science environmental science or aquaculture.
  • Practical experience and knowledge in subtidal marine research including high-level of proficiency in species identification for temperate reef flora and fauna.
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of computer programs (word-processing spreadsheets field management systems) including statistical summaries/ analyses.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision using initiative and sound judgment with a solution focus within WH&S standards and policies.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $105665 comprising base salary within the range of $80869 to $90312 plus 17% superannuation.
