DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an important clerical position involving responsibility for the performance of a number of varied or unrelated clerical tasks which require the exercise of independent judgment and a general understanding of specific laws office rules procedures and policies. Clerks doing rather varied work may receive detailed instructions at the beginning of each assignment while clerks may receive infrequent general instructions. In either case unusual problems or situations not previously encountered are referred to supervisors before action is taken. Work of employees is checked by immediate supervisors or by another step in the clerical process. Immediate supervision may be exercised over the work of one or more clerical assistants. Does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
Collect and compiles statistics or other information;
Acts as information clerk where a general knowledge of personnel location office activities and established office practice is involved;
Checks briefs and other legal papers vouchers and invoices for accuracy and completeness;
Sorts indexes and files documents and other materials;
Operates all office equipment;
Maintains simple cash and cash disbursement records;
Prepares daily or other regular and special reports covering items handled;
Prepares deposit slips and bundles and seals cash for delivery to bank; Prepares and checks payroll;
Assists in keeping budget accounts for their department;
Prepares various reports for outside agencies;
May be required to enter salary information into data base via a personal computer; Performs a variety of clerical account keeping tasks.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of procedures used in keeping financial accounts and records good knowledge of business and arithmetic and good command of the English language; knowledgeable in the use of a personal computer; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and directions; clerical aptitude; mental alertness; good judgment; tact and courtesy; neatness of appearance and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency recognized by the New York State Education Department; PLUS 3 years of complex clerical experience which shall have included some work in keeping financial records.
