The Corporate Controllers organization providesfinancial information for Pfizer Inc. to management shareholders and regulators. In addition to the consolidation and analysis ofthe monthly financial submissions from businesses around the globe the Controllersorganization is responsible fordeveloping and maintainingaccounting policies and guidanceensuring adequatefinancialcontrols are in place and addressing the ever-changingbusiness and regulatory requirements. To better meet these needsthe Controller Organization is an active partner with the worldwide finance leaders and business operations teams advising on theappropriate accounting and financial reporting for ongoing new and proposed activities or transactions. Additionally Corporate Controllers is actively involved in influencing the regulatory environment byinterfacing withgovernment and financial organizations such as the SEC and the FASB.
The primary responsibilities of this Director of Technical Accounting role are to perform and maintain the accounting and valuation work for transactions and non-financial instruments such as acquisitions divestitures spin-offs joint ventures re-organizations impairment of goodwill and other intangible assets etc. Responsibilities also include researching technical accounting issues project management and effective interaction with stakeholders providing input for valuations and transaction-related accounting supporting the preparation of SEC financial reporting requirements ensuring that accounting policies and procedures are up-to-date and responsive liaise with external and internal auditors on accounting and reporting issues and participate on special projects such as carve out financial statements or the new revenue recognition standard implementation project. Effective communication and collaboration skills are critical.
This role will report to the Senior Director Accounting Advisory Services (Business Development Valuations & Business Arrangements).
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Overall specific responsibilities could include:
- Planning and executing on valuations and accounting processes for acquisitions divestiture joint ventures and impairment review work for goodwill and other intangible assets
- Maintaining and performing the Companys business combination goodwill and impairment SOX controls and processes
- Coordinating and reviewing work performed by valuation specialists
- Assisting external auditors and internal audit team with control and substantive audit requests
- Providing support and accounting guidance to division finance and project teams on complex transactions to ensure proper compliance with U.S. GAAP and Corporate policy
- Researching accounting issues and documenting conclusions in formal memos or position papers
- Preparing or revising Controllers Accounting Policies and Procedures to reflect new accounting pronouncements or guidance to improve clarity or to respond to changing circumstances
- Monitoring and analyzing relevant proposed accounting rule changes; assisting in the implementation of new requirement.
- Special projects as identified concerning accounting and financial reporting including work on carve-out financial statements implementation of new accounting standards
- Maintaining professional and technical knowledge and meeting continuing professional education requirements by attending educational workshops and conferences and reading professional publications
- Participating in presentations/training sessions on technical accounting issues
- Representing Pfizer at PhRMA Accounting and Reporting Principles Subcommittee meetings to discuss accounting and reporting issues facing the pharmaceutical industry learn about best practices and benchmark key issues
Financial Reporting
- Provides oversight and reviews of selected areas as part of the preparation of Form 10K/10Q in accordance with US GAAP and SEC requirements.
- Assists in the implementation of both financial reporting and management reporting changes where required
- Works with our external and internal auditors in understanding and resolving concerns
Controls / Compliance
- Responsible for identifying and implementing control and process improvements and simplification measures related to the collective responsibilities of this role
- Provides guidance on accounting policies and procedures in accordance with corporate policy to help ensure proper compliance
- Works with Financial Controls leaders and Corporate Audit where necessary to understand concerns and support remediation action steps
- Partners with Corporate Audit Staff and Controller team members to drive closure of open audit issues and proactively work to prevent future issues/manage risk and provides senior leaders with status updates as appropriate
- Develops a strong relationship between Technical Accounting and our external auditors (KPMG LLP)
- Proactively flags controls concerns and recommends improvements
Provide Accounting Expertise (in consultation with VP Technical Accounting and Corporate Controller)
- Proactively provides timely guidance and expertise to worldwide Controllership and Finance teams on accounting issues guaranteeing compliance with U.S. GAAP Corporate Policies and SEC rules. Respond to day-to-day questions on accounting and reporting and providing guidance by analyzing data and assumptions and formulating possible alternatives while recognizing when to involve others
- Provide accounting advisory services and technical accounting memos for new or changing strategies transactions initiatives and activities
- Advises Finance leadership regarding complex financial accounting and reporting issues and transaction structuring offering alternate scenarios and solutions as appropriate
Policy/Process
- Drives consistent and effective policy guidance globally while understanding and considering the perspectives of the global markets
- Review Pfizers US GAAP accounting policies for relevant areas of responsibility and ensure they provide clear direction to accounting personnel when applying US GAAP to Pfizers business activities
Leadership/Management
- Builds strong collaborative relationships open transparent communication and effective partnership and coordination with global stakeholders
- Works as a team member and assists other in Controllers/Finance in navigating issues and providing guidance with regards to execution or implementation of accounting and financial reporting related items within their respective areas of responsibilities
- Ensures effective clear and timely communications to aid in enabling appropriate execution of US GAAP accounting rules and Company policies.
- Coordinates issues with the Consolidations and External Reporting groups
REQUIRED BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Big 4 national office experience is a significant plus
Prior Experience and Skills:
- 8 years of overall technical accounting experience required. Experience must be directly related to publicly held companies. Combined public accounting / private industry experience is a plus
- Demonstrated proficiency in US GAAP and SEC rules strong technical and analytical accounting skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills enabling effective communication with all levels of management; able to communicate complex concepts in a concise manner. Ability to work as a member of a team
- Knowledge of accounting rules processes and financial statement disclosure requirements and strong business acumen
- Leads effective and efficient projects Drives issues to resolution
- Strong analytic skills: able to clearly link financial results/projections to operational performance drivers
- Proven ability to work across functions and positively influence outcomes when there is not direct reporting line

Technical Skills:
- Demonstrated proficiency in US GAAP SEC Rules and FASB standards
- Demonstrated experience with technical accounting research; experience understanding interpreting and applying US GAAP and SEC accounting rules including complex technical accounting areas
- Experience in applying ASC 820 fair value measurement principles a strong plus
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or advanced degree in finance or accounting
- Minimum of 5 years experience with a Big 4 accounting firm
- Experience in a leadership role at a global company with life sciences or other manufacturing operations

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $156600.00 to $261000.00.* In addition this position is eligible for participation in Pfizers Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 20.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
