Job Description

Shenandoah Conservatory is seeking nominations and applications for an exceptional music therapy teacher and practitioner. This one-year visiting position - housed within the Conservatory Academics Division - beginsAugust 2025. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester VA.

Responsibilities:

The chosen candidate will further strengthen Shenandoahs Conservatorys profile and reputation as a premiere place of study music therapy. The desired candidate will:

  1. Teach undergraduate and graduate music therapy courses
  2. Advise and mentor undergraduate music therapy students
  3. Participate in music therapy program events (e.g. Colloquium IPE etc)
  4. Support recruitment efforts
  5. Additional responsibilities based on qualifications and experience.

ABOUT THE MUSIC THERAPY PROGRAM: Established in 1974 themusic therapy program has long served as a leader in the field and is proud to advance its role as Virginias premiere and progressive center of music therapy education and training. Offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates our programs are recognized as innovative and forward-oriented and are continually updated to meet and promote advances in the field. Undergraduates begin music therapy coursework in their first semester and have opportunities for hands-on clinical experiences throughout the program. Musicianship is core to each degree program with students completing comprehensive coursework in guitar keyboard voice percussion and music technology. Interdisciplinary experiences are infused into student learning with students participating inInterprofessional Education (IPE) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP) experiences throughout their studies. Aligned with advances in the field Shenandoah University offers the first Masters degree in Music Therapy and Professional Counseling in Virginia which provides a pathway to a dual Board Certification (MT-BC) and Professional Counselor (LPC) credentialing.

Required Skills

Required qualifications and skills include:

  1. A PhD (including ABD) in music therapy or a related field. Candidates with a Masters degree will also be considered
  2. Music Therapy Board Certification (MT-BC)
  3. At least five years of clinical experience as a music therapist (or equivalent)
  4. A passion for teaching and an orientation to innovation in pedagogy and curriculum.
  5. A mindfulness for student well-being and ability to contribute to the Conservatorys commitment to Belonging.
  6. A thoughtful orientation toward collaborative work.
