Consider joining DEQs Brownfields Program where we work collaboratively with communities non-profits and developers to address environmental hazards preventing the reuse and redevelopment of properties across Montana. DEQs Brownfields program is nationally recognized for its innovative approaches addressing contamination at sites ranging from abandoned gas stations to historic structures and bankrupt railyards to derelict junkyards. Successful projects have resulted in new coffee shops breweries restaurants affordable housing parks public amenities and downtown businesses across Montana.
We are looking for a motivated collaborative and engaging Environmental Project Officers to join our team in the Brownfield Program of the Waste Management & Remediation Division.

The Brownfields Project Officer is responsible for providing agency assistance in project management for the investigation evaluation and cleanup of contaminated sites in Montana under the appropriate regulatory authority. This position ensures protection of Montanas environment through application and knowledge of environmental laws and regulations. The Brownfields Project Officer must plan coordinate and direct interdisciplinary technical studies as well as evaluate project alternatives relative to applicable environmental laws. This position reviews all project and technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance and will aide in the selection of technically appropriate cost-effective remedies to preserve and protect the human health and the environment. Project management requires this position to act as a liaison to the public and coordinate with various stakeholder groups.

The Brownfields Project Officer position includes a career ladder for professional development and pay progression. This position may be eligible for occasional telework.

Minimum requirements include:

Bachelors degree in earth science physical biological environmental or engineering.
Two years experience in natural resource processes remediation mine waste reclamation or other related hazardous substance investigation and cleanup.
Preferred experience with customer service public speaking project management procurement contracting and experience in program field.
Current valid Drivers License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy.
Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training is required upon hire and Medical Surveillance Program enrollment is recommended.
Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
