You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailWorks under direction of Prof Engineer qualified to perform inspection of bridges culverts and other assets such as pedestrian ramps barriers guardrails signs stormwater BMP (Best Management Practices) retaining walls etc. Receives training in how to visually & physically conduct bridge culvert & asset inspections to include climbing structures & operating bridge inspection equipment & assists higher level bridge specialists in physically & visually inspecting bridges & culverts (e.g. visually inspects all components of bridges; sounds bridges using hammer or sounding rod; assists in making sketches & taking photographs of areas of deterioration; climbs bridges; enters & crawls through culverts; wades in water &/or operates boat to determine scour holes; positions lifts carries &/or climbs ladders; takes measurements; records data) to determine existence & extent of damage deterioration & potential hazards. Works independently or with a higher level Bridge Specialist as a team in performing bridge inspections during training period (e.g. uses 50/60 lb. ladder to set up against structures & climb ladder with hammer camera clipboard etc. to get within arms length of bridge in order to inspect bridge & successfully complete a Bridge Inspection Field Report; walks or crawls into culverts to inspect bridge; walks across catwalks &/or beams of bridge to inspect; inspects bridge from snooper bucket truck; inspects hairline cracks of bridge structure; sounds bridges to determine the condition & know the condition of the bridge structure). Operates rowboat wades through water to check soundness & condition of bridge structure with probing rod inspects bridge to determine & evaluate extent of structural condition damage & deterioration & potential hazards. Operates a variety of bridge inspection equipment (e.g. operates ultrasonic thickness gage to measure thickness of steel & other metals to detect cracks & corrosion activity in steel imbedded in concrete not otherwise visible performs core sampling using coring machine). Sketches & photographs area of deterioration in structural components. Operates state vehicle (e.g. pickup truck or van) to perform bridge culvert or asset inspection & transport bridge inspection equipment (e.g. coring machine rebar locator & chain drag) to & from sites.
Receives training in preparing & maintaining records of bridge culvert and asset inspection & inventory. Prepares reports on culverts assets damage to structure of bridges & assists in making recommendations regarding condition & rehabilitation drafts & sketches plans for bridge repair & painting & collects & records input data regarding bridge analysis & rating system & bridge management system. Must operate computer &/or laptop tablet and smart level to input & retrieve bridge culvert and asset data.
Assists Dist. Bridge Engineer & crews in making repairs to bridge structures & deck. Collects & reviews pertinent data in order to prepare for site inspections. Updates bridge culvert and asset inventory file updates pictures & videos; attends bridge & culvert inspector training school to keep current on new inspection procedures to meet state & Federal laws. May be required to provide emergency evaluation of isolated bridge damage. Performs other job related duties as assigned by higher authority.
-2 years training or 2 years experience in reading & interpreting plans & specifications to determine basic dimensions & bridge terminology; AND 2 years training or 2 years experience in position applying knowledge of bridge design construction & maintenance to complete daily assignments; AND valid drivers license.
-Or possess National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technologies Level I or Level II inspection certification (i.e. under National Society of Professional Engineers); AND valid drivers license
-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

-All bargaining unit new hires to ODOT must serve a one-year probationary period.
-This position is overtime eligible per FLSA Standards.
-If this position is filled internally the wage rate will be determined in accordance with the contract.
-The final applicant accepted for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to appointment to test for illegal drug use. Medical marijuana is prohibited as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test. An applicant with a positive test result will not be offered employment per section 3719.01 & 3719.41 of Ohio revised code.
-The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position. An individual assessment of an applicants prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.
-A physical ability test (PAT) will be given for the Bridge Specialist 1 position and candidates MUST pass the test in order to be considered for employment. PAT candidates will be selected based in part on meeting the prescribed minimum qualifications including education and/or experience and licensure requirements of this position. Applicants selected to take the test will be notified of the exact time and location to report for the test administration.
