Join the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County as a Ranger Operations Assistant Manager where youll help oversee the maintenance public use and safety of our forest preserves while ensuring that visitors have exceptional meaningful experiences in nature.
In this dynamic role youll support the Ranger Operations Manager by managing day-to-day operations coordinating special events and permits supervising crews and preserving natural resources-all while helping lead the team that keeps DuPages 26000 acres of public land thriving and accessible.
What Youll Do
- Coordinate logistics for public events and special use permits ensuring smooth operations and policy compliance.
- Assist in the supervision scheduling and development of Ranger Operations staff.
- Monitor facility and preserve conditions addressing maintenance needs and resource protection.
- Oversee crew assignments for preserve maintenance including cleaning and restoration efforts.
- Respond to field issues such as encroachments public concerns and event coordination.
- Collaborate across departments to support district-wide initiatives and ensure smooth daily operations.
- Support a positive team environment with coaching conflict resolution and staff development.
- Participate in hiring performance evaluation and other supervisory responsibilities.
What Youll Need
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
- Bachelors Degree in Park Administration Forestry Resource Management Wildlife Management Outdoor Recreation or related field; 4 - 6 years of related experience with 1 - 4 years of direct supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education training and experience.
- Valid Drivers License in good standing.
- Must have and maintain Illinois Mandated Reporter certification or obtain upon hire.
- Must have and maintain CPR AED and First Aid Certification or obtain within 6 months.
- Must pass a medical evaluation and fit test per OSHA regulations to ensure a respirator can be safely worn when required
- Completion and passing of S-130 Firefighters Training and S-190 Introduction to Fire Behavior (or equivalent) within two (2) years as developed by the National Wildfire Coordination Group.
- Familiar with district ordinances policies regulations and guidelines as well as federal state and local laws and regulations relating to district lands.
- Well-versed in equipment and techniques for minor repair and maintenance of preserve facilities and grounds.
- Deep expertise in principles and techniques of park management and natural resources management.
- Familiar with floodwater management issues.
- Thorough understanding of and capacity to safely operate a variety of maintenance equipment and machinery including: chainsaws lawnmowers string trimmers snow removal etc
- Familiar with hydrology meteorology facility/event/permit/program operations.
- Proficiency in word processing database and spreadsheet software packages.
- Demonstrated success in planning organizing assigning and supervising assigned personnel effectively.
- Skilled in interacting courteously and professionally with the public.
- Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships.
- Strong communication skills both verbally and in writing.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and data.
Schedule Pay & Benefits
- Full-time Varying - including weekends and holidays.
- Starting Pay: $73403 - 82618 / year.
