The School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks a full-time (1.0 FTE) 9-month (academic year) Clinical Assistant Professor Art History with an emphasis on African Art or Art of the African Diaspora of any time period beginning August 2025. The position responsibilities include teaching at least three courses each semester undergraduate and graduate online and in-person. Teaching will be on the Tempe and Phoenix campuses along with curriculum development student mentorship and service.

The School of Art seeks a candidate with a rich and varied skill set in the field of African Art or Art of the African Diaspora as well as technical and conceptual issues within their field of expertise. The successful candidate will be actively engaged in the professional field of art history. The successful candidate will have experience in higher education teaching as the instructor of record. The successful candidate will teach upper and lower division undergraduate and graduate courses modalities may include online hybrid and in-person. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development and student mentorship within the Art History and Museum Studies programs. The successful candidate will work with a varied student population and is able to communicate to students their progress while recognizing their varied backgrounds. The successful candidate will have service responsibilities. The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills and be able to effectively communicate and prioritize deadlines. We are especially interested in applicants who are dedicated to advancing the ASU Charter and realizing ASUs Design Aspirations.
Required Qualifications:
PhD in art history or related field ABD accepted
Demonstrated evidence of participation in professional activities relative to the expectations of the candidates area of expertise
Demonstrated excellence in teaching with experience in higher education.
Desired Qualifications:
A secondary area of expertise that may include Museum Administration Museum Education or Museum Technology
Demonstrated ability to teach in-person and online upper and lower division undergraduate courses using innovative pedagogy
Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with peers colleagues and professionals in academic settings.
Evidence of sustained student mentorship activity
