Job Description
The job opening is for a full-time Research Staff Member in the Western Digital Corporation emerging device fabrication group.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build nanoscale devices for a range of exploratory projects such as non-volatile memories novel magnetic biosensor applications AI memory/compute architectures superconducting qubits superconducting electronics etc.
- We are looking for a scientist/engineer with a strong background in chemical mechanical polishing and nanoscale device processing. The candidate we hire will own the CMP sector in our research cleanroom where he/she will be responsible for developing new polishing recipes for a wide array of devices ranging from emerging memories to qubits to advanced biological sensors.
- In addition in time he/she will help integrate these CMP techniques into a variety of our process flows.
- The device fabrication is performed in a state-of-the art research cleanroom on our San Jose headquarters campus. You will be joining a fabrication team of 20 engineers and technicians with nearly 500 years of combined nanofabrication experience.
Qualifications :
REQUIRED:
- Minimum of a Masters degree in Chemistry Chemical engineering Physics Materials Science Electrical Engineering or closely related field with 5 years of professional experience or a Ph.D. with 2 years is required.
PREFERRED:
- Extensive background in CMP.
- Hands-on experience with a range of nanofabrication process equipment including AFM.
- Demonstrated ability to self-direct a research project.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment
- Experience in device integration (CAD/mask layout/designing process flows/running process lots)

- An employees pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills ability knowledge of the job; (3) performance contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
- The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in California Colorado New York or remote jobs that can be performed in California Colorado and New York. This range may be modified in the future.
- If your position is non-exempt you are eligible for overtime pay pursuant to company policy and applicable laws. You may also be eligible for shift differential pay depending on the shift to which you are assigned.
You will be eligible to be considered for bonuses under either Western Digitals Short Term Incentive Plan (STI Plan) or the Sales Incentive Plan (SIP) which provides incentive awards based on Company and individual performance depending on your role and your performance. You may be eligible to participate in our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs) or cash equivalents pursuant to the terms of the LTI plan. Please note that not all roles are eligible to participate in the LTI program and not all roles are eligible for equity under the LTI plan.
