Job Duties

Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute a 72-bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility is seeking a healthcare chaplain to facilitate non-denominational spiritual services for individuals with serious mental illness and substance misuse disorders to assist in the recovery process. This dynamic position offers individual spiritual counseling and group sessions/services.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in divinity and/or pastoral services from an accredited university.
Ability to plan and implement 1:1 and group chaplain services to meet individual spiritual needs and assist in the recovery process.
Working experience as a Chaplain.
Valid drivers license is required and must remain valid throughout employment.

This position will also require:
Ability to work with people with severe mental illness.
Demonstrate and verbalize awareness of safety and security procedures.
Ability to work with staff volunteers and outside agencies.
Quality written and verbal communication skills.
Must be able to work irregular hours and work weekends.

Additional Considerations

Previous chaplain experience in mental health setting.
Experience working with individuals with mental illness substance misuse disorders and/or involvement in the judicial system.
Veterans and people with National Service.
Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.

Under Virginia Code 37.2-314 and 37.2-408.1 the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services is prohibited from employing or using as volunteers persons who have been convicted of specific barrier crimes or persons who may be the subject of pending barrier charges.

DBHDS facilities are no longer required to ensure that all staff members are vaccinated against COVID-19. However facilities encourage and educate staff on the benefits and continue to offer COVID-19 vaccination programs to staff residents/clients.
