Position Summary
The Chaplain and Director of Spiritual Life functions as pastor to the university campus including developing and providing religious services and an array of student services and opportunities for spiritual growth. The Chaplain must possess the appropriate educational credentials to teach adjunct courses in the Religion department subject to approval by the Religion department.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Plan and implement spiritual and religious programming activities for the campus including but not limited to the following: weekly worship services Wilson Lecture Series Bible studies fellowship activities and other events that support the spiritual and religious needs of the campus community. Work to develop student engagement and student leadership in spiritual and religious life to provide opportunities for professional and personal development. Help to create a comfortable spiritual and religious atmosphere to foster students spiritual and religious growth raise issues and challenge students and others in the university community to examine their faith and spiritual growth. Work with students to encourage capable students to explore issues related to vocation and calling. Serve as advisor to student organizations related to spirituality regardless of faith/denomination. Represent the university to the community and serve as a liaison to the United Methodist Church as well as other Christian churches and faith groups. To that end the University Chaplain in collaboration with faculty staff and student leaders will coordinate visits on behalf of Texas Wesleyan University on an annual basis to at least 6 venues where youth gather. Responsible and accessible to provide religious spiritual and moral leadership providing pastoral care and counseling to the campus community while cultivating a culture of hospitality. Serve as the primary representative for all church relations; engage in interfaith community civic educational and recreational activities sponsored by or related to university interests. Work some evenings and weekends to ensure the success of all departmental initiatives. Participate in university and departmental committee work and projects proving leadership when appropriate. Monitor departmental budgets and financial accounts. Serve as liaison between students interested in vocational ministry and the appropriate church constituencies. Ensure that the campus ministry programs are staying abreast with local and national ideas and methods. Maintain communication with the Department of Religion to enhance student opportunities to stay current and informed on the departments programs classes and pre-ministerial academic initiatives. Work with area United Methodist churches to recruit students as Religion majors. An example could include working with the Lydia Patterson Institute to recruit students for the Templeton Scholars program. Engage in the Universitys institutional effectiveness process including annual planning and outcomes assessment applying effective methods of evaluation and continuous improvement as related to the Chaplains area. Develop and maintain relationships with peer programs at other institutions of higher education. Maintain a network of professional colleagues in the field of college chaplaincy nationwide. Remain abreast of and have the ability to discuss current events and topics within the field of spirituality and higher education. With supervisor approval the Chaplain position will be eligible to adjunct for one religion course or ASE each semester.
