Job Description

Minimum Job Requirements

  • RN Licensure within the State of Florida or Multi-State Enhanced Nursing License Compact (eNLC) maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • American Heart Association BLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • American Heart Association PALS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • CHEMO/APHO Aphon - Pediatric Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Course - must maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • 4-7 years of RN experience administering chemotherapy according to APHON provider guidelines

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • BSN degree.
  • Possesses proficiency in computers and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) preferred and COG roadmaps.
  • Must have and maintain one nation certification in good standing i.e.: CPON CPHON or BMTCN.
  • Career Development: Join Childrens Oncology Group (COG) Nursing Discipline preferably within 5 years of hire.
  • Ability to oversee and optimize the daily chemotherapy administered on and off a fast-paced oncology unit.
  • Able to analyze and interpret protocol data and utilize the information to ensure the staff RNs safe administration of individualized chemotherapy including supportive medication.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to positively influence hold self and others accountable.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with attending physicians APRNs and staff nurses.
  • Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice analytical thinking and service excellence in practice.

Job Summary

Assesses plans facilitates and evaluates the coordination of in-patient chemotherapy patient care according to unit/department policies and procedures. Provides clinical leadership utilizes effective problem-solving strategies and applies evidence-based practice to ensure timely treatments of detailed protocols.
Facilitates patient throughput with chemotherapy admissions minor procedures/OR procedural processes and overall workflow efficiencies related to the individualized roadmap. Responsible for maintaining and revising practice standards and facilitates order set changes as they pertain to processes including power plan updates aligned with Childrens Oncology Group updated protocols. Works under the supervision of the Nursing Manager/Director.

Job Specific Duties

  • Oversees & administers direct care to immune-compromised patients including Central line/IV site monitoring lab draws & monitoring during high census; performs nursing assessment & intervention.
  • Ensures chemotherapy patient admission have the correct day and the correct FIN including validation of prior studies needed before day 1 of chemotherapy according to roadmap.
  • Verifies every chemotherapy patients Roadmap protocol power plan and orders for correctness and accuracy daily.
  • Facilitate communication between nurses and physician/APRNs for clarifications on orders needed for chemotherapy and supportive medications.
  • Ensures communication of the patients progress to physicians/APRNs including critical findings and changes in the patients condition during chemotherapy treatment.
  • Provide daily timely education to nurses on unit for information about chemotherapies monitoring and patient education including individual patient needs for following cycle.
  • Witness chemotherapy on the unit by following and reinforcing the chemotherapy administration standard work with oncology nurses.
  • Witness chemotherapy administration off the oncology unit ensuring chemotherapy administration guidelines are adhered to.
  • Identifies and updates powerplans to be in alignment with COG protocols by actively participating as the nursing expert in workgroups.
  • Ensures communication and coordination between pharmacy and bedside nurse for timely admiration of chemotherapy.
  • Maintains inpatient data collection for Cancer Institute and regulatory bodies.
  • Plans implements and documents the plan of care in collaboration with the other disciplines and services to assure safe and efficient care.
  • Follows physicians orders administers chemotherapy & patient medications and reconstitutes medications when needed. Adheres to six rights of medication administration as per policy.
  • Provides interventions which include electrolyte infusions sepsis monitoring and transfusions with blood products.
  • Ensures safe analgesics/narcotics administration monitoring and reassessment as per hospital Pain Management Policy and Procedure.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve processes and assists with projects to enhance workflow utilizing Lean methodologies and tools.
  • Assists and supports the RNs and team with all hospital codes and rapid responses.
  • Responsible for in patient care coordination for inpatient chemotherapy to include accountability for patients admission.
  • Ensures bedside nurse coordinates and monitors chemotherapy patient flow.
  • Educates staff nurses on study and non-study protocols to ensure data is accurately collected.
  • Supports departmental goals and the hospital strategic plan. Actively participates in the nursing governance council and unit based committee.
  • Assists in communication of hospital updates and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Patient Perception Survey data.
  • Fosters staff empowerment and open communication. Leads and guides staff to build a high performance and engaged team.
  • Ensures the provision of education about disease processes & treatment and documents patient/family teachings on health related needs in the Electronic Health Record.
  • Works collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team and promotes the team concept within department as well as hospital-wide in alignment with the Cancer Institute.
  • Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team in daily care planning rounds as appropriate while fostering a Family Centered Care environment.
  • Ensures nurse documents the plan of care in collaboration with other disciplines and services to assure care for follow up admissions.
  • Participates in collection of all regulated unit based audited required by FACT COG and COC.
  • Achieves a 95% CEI by conducting chart audits utilizing the EMR to ensure staff adherence to regulatory requirements of the DNV CMS DOH FACT COG COC and other accrediting agencies.
  • Achieves and maintains acceptable standards with infection control goals achieving acceptable designated target/rates by performing infection prevention standards for assigned shift.
