Job Description

Looking to step back into in-house editorial work after some time away Interested in a one-year contract that includes the option of at-home working two days a week Or are you looking for the chance to work at one of Australias most successful and progressive publishing houses

At Hachette Australia were seeking an early to mid-career Editor to join our acclaimed book publishing program for a twelve-month parental leave cover based in our Sydney CBD office. This role is for you if have at least two years experience as an editorial all-rounder and are looking to demonstrate your board skillset in a busy and dynamic environment. Experience editing illustrated childrens books is advantageous but not a prerequisite.

About the role:

On a full-time twelve-month contract youll join the editorial team within our Australian Publishing Division and report to the Editorial Manager. Youll thrive on project editing adult and childrens fiction and non-fiction and producing books to the highest standard on time and within budget. Youll also be an enthusiastic and engaged team player contributing to editorial discussions and process improvements and be a confident ambassador for Hachette and our authors.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Building strong collaborative relationships with authors and illustrators
  • Scheduling and project editing titles to meet all critical path dates and editorial standards including managing legal reads and sensitivity reads
  • Booking briefing and reviewing the work of third parties such as freelance editors designers typesetters and indexers
  • Hands-on structural editing including writing structural reports
  • Copyediting and proofreading for childrens picture books including editing illustrations
  • Sourcing and maintaining metadata including writing copy.

The salary for this role will be dependent on experience but will be in line with the Editor salary in the Book Industry Award 2020 plus superannuation.

About you:

Youre a fit for the role if you have these skills and attributes:

  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • A high level of skill in all aspects of editorial craft across a variety of categories and genres
  • Outstanding organisation and scheduling skills with the ability to multi-task prioritise make independent decisions and adapt to meet deadlines
  • Exceptional collaborative interpersonal and communication skills with particular strengths in author and illustrator care
  • Avid reader enthusiastically engaged with the commercial and creative aspects of the contemporary Australian publishing landscape
  • Tertiary qualifications in English Editing Creative Writing or similar and a minimum of two years editorial experience in a similar role.
