Job Description

The North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) was established by the North Carolina State Board of Education as an online community service K-12 public school for students throughout the state of North Carolina. NCVPS is governed by the North Carolina State Board of Education (NCSBE) and reports on a day-to-day basis to the NCDPI Chief Academic Officer. As a result of NCVPS work students in the public schools of North Carolina have access to online courses that are unavailable due to teacher shortages or scheduling conflicts. These courses provide students with equity of access to a high-quality educational experience regardless of where they live within the state.

NCVPS: INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST (ITS) - OVERVIEW AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To be considered for this position candidates must be able to work approximately 1520 hours per week. The working hours for the ITS positions are flexible (day evening and weekend hours per your schedule) and will be discussed in more detail during the hiring process and will be adapted throughout the term of employment.
  • Hiring for this position may be contingent upon the completion of initial training and a one-time design contract to gauge interest. Details will be discussed during the interview process.
  • While ITS positions do not require certification in a specific subject area there are certain qualifications potential candidates should possess.
  • Because of temporary employee requirements individuals offered the position of ITS are ineligible to teach for NCVPS.
  • Please review the job responsibilities and job qualifications below and determine if you might be the right fit for an Instructional Technology Specialist contract position responsible for designing content according to design standards for NCVPS.

A qualified candidate should have an Instructional Design background and extensive work experience designing content in an online environment is desired. The candidate should have experience working in the Canvas Learning Management System a high level of understanding of copyright and fair use laws accessibility laws and guidelines and be available to work consistently 15 hours per week. The number of hours the contractor is allowed to work each week will be discussed and specified by the supervisor upon hiring. The hourly rate is determined by Human Resources based on the experience and education level of the candidate.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Part-Time Instructional Technology Specialists will perform various tasks related to the instructional design of NCVPS courses. These may include but are not limited to:

  • Review and revise courses to ensure they meet accessibility standards.
  • Review and revise courses to ensure they meet copyright and/or fair use standards terms of use agreements etc.
  • Use designated technologies to caption existing or new videos according to specifications.
  • Update course content and materials in the master course shells located in the Canvas Learning Management System as directed by the Curriculum Staff.
  • Plan design format and insert course materials provided by content developers/writers into the Canvas Learning Management System according to the provided design standards.
  • Create and/or revise learning objects and/or lessons using lesson authoring tools such as H5P.
  • Create edit revise and/or upload videos into the NCVPS video streaming software.
  • Complete all work following the NCVPS Instructional Designers specifications and development timeline.
  • Collaborate with NCVPS team members including the Curriculum Staff content writing teams and other ITS team members.
  • Complete all online training as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

MISCELLANEOUS:

  • Interviews for the ITS position will be held July-August 2025. The anticipated start date for the ITS position will be September 2025 and the anticipated end date is June 30 2026.
  • 3 years prior experience is preferred with instructional design via Canvas (or a current LMS).
  • 3 years prior experience is preferred with designing online content in K-12 school settings.
  • The contract may be renewable based on needs budget and overall performance.
  • Any termination of work by either party will result in prorated pay based on the completed items submitted as determined by the NCVPS supervisor and contract stipulations.
  • This is a non-licensed position. Licensed applicants are welcome.
