Job Description

As a Lead Manufacturing Engineer NPI you will be responsible for leading the introduction of new product variants projects and processes to all manufacturing and operations activities.  Serve as a key liaison for the Operations team for all actions related to manufacturing issues documentation cost reduction and process improvements.  You will interface with production engineering quality safety service and technology on New Product Introduction using the Smiths Product Lifecycle Process. As the owner of continuous improvement projects for the operations department you will drive LEAN culture focusing on standardization quality improved performance and increased throughput and production standards.

Job duties to include but are not limited to;

  • Job duties to include but are not limited to;

  • Evaluates improves manufacturing processes by applying knowledge of product design fabrication assembly tooling mechanical and electrical principals to improve efficiency and reduce waste
  • Key contact with Technology for New Product Introduction through the Product Lifecycle Process. Leading activities such as Design for Manufacture pFMEA Capacity Analyses Capital Requirements Product Routing definition and change management efforts
  • Representation for operations department at all NPI Gate review meetings providing technical and process knowledge where needed
  • Use a data driven approach to develop evaluate and improve manufacturing methods utilizing knowledge of product design materials and parts fabrication processes tooling and production equipment capabilities assembly methods and quality control standards.
  • Implement maintain and improve current manufacturing processes including equipment documentation training gages and tooling/fixtures to optimize quality productivity and cost performance
  • Implement corrective actions to resolve manufacturing process problems through testing evaluation and analysis
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure manufacturability process prepares process FMEAs root cause analyses plans facility equipment and resource changes and initial product builds and ensure that Manufacturing deliverables to Development Project Plans are completed and on time
  • Plan specify select validate and implement new equipment processes and facilities in manufacturing
  • Engage with the appropriate personnel in the identification and resolution of Corrective/Preventative actions to address Safety Quality Technical and Manufacturing issues
  • Refine Develop & Implement current and future SOP work instructions routings BOM test procedures and master process documents
  • Analyze and plan work force utilization space requirements workflow and design layout of equipment/workspace for maximum efficiency
  • Report and improve all operational process KPIs (Y-Tree KPIs and reporting)
  • Support deployment of the Smiths Excellence System leading deployment and providing ongoing assistance to Operations implementations
  • Other duties assigned           

Qualifications :

Education: Bachelors Degree in Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent field)

Experience: 5 or more years of direct manufacturing experience and Six Sigma Lean Certification preferred

Technical Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • AutoCAD experience
  • Proficient with MS Word Excel PowerPoint Visio and Project
  • PMP Certification or experience a plus
  • Knowledge of LEAN manufacturing principles
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Hands-on experience with electro-mechanical troubleshooting to include sub-assembly level and/or electronic instruments and systems to a component level on printed circuit board assemblies a plus
  • Chemical or Electrical manufacturing experience a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including technical and process or procedure writing
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to conduct root cause analysis
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment

Impact: Planning and Decision-Making

  • Ownership for all milestones associated with NPI PLP and CI projects.
  • Work is reviewed upon completion for effectiveness in meeting objectives or goals.
  • Decisions have a direct impact on work processes and outcomes
  • Erroneous decisions or recommendations or failure to complete assignments normally results in serious delays and considerable expenditure of additional time resources and funds                 

Scope and Complexity

  • Works on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a large variety of factors.
  • Creates and improves new or established procedures.
  • Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment overall adequacy and accuracy.          
  • Interactions typically concern resolution of operational and process issues.                    

Health Safety and Environmental Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods; a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Must be able to maneuver to all areas of the office shop warehouse or manufacturing plant
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend reach kneel twist and grip items while working at assigned desk area.
  • Must have the manual dexterity and coordination to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to simultaneously manage several objectives changing priorities and reassign priorities to complete assignments.
  • Must be able to read write speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and aural cues.
  • Complete all work in a safe manner and follow all safety requirements consistent with supporting the Companys goals.
  • Lifting guidelines in accordance with the Manual Lifting Guidelines noted in the Safety Handbook.
  • Follow all environmental requirements consistent with supporting the companys environmental performance goals.
  • Complete and actively participate in all other EHS training requirements.
  • Work environment is typically considered within a Smiths location during normal or extended business hours to include offices manufacturing plants and repair facilities.  Work environment may also include customer sites including oil well sites and meeting venues. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and approved PPE is required when on the factory floor.

The compensation for this position ranges from $57992.00 - $135315.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location skills job-related knowledge and experience. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions.
