Job Title: Middle School Athletic Trainer
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Athletic Training from a regionally accredited college or university;
- BOC-ATC National Certification;
- Current New Mexico Athletic Training Licensure Board license or ability to obtain proper licensure within 90 days of hire; and
- Current CPR/AED Certification.
Vision and Focus of Position:
- To create an athletic training position that will serve the RRPS middle school student population. The pilot position will begin by serving all four RRPS middle schools with the intention being to have two Middle School Athletic Trainers who will serve the different high school feeder middle schools respectively;
- The Middle School Athletic Trainer will be available for evaluation rehabilitation and personalized care at each middle school at least twice a week; and
- The Middle School Athletic Trainer will provide medical services for events and games.
Essential Job Responsibilities of Athletic Trainer:
- Be available for evaluation rehabilitation and provide personalized care at each middle school twice a week at a minimum;
- Review pre-participation medical exams to ensure health of the student-athlete while collaborating with the athletic coordinator to ensure proper procedures and timeliness;
- Coordinates the medical coverage of events and practices in conjunction with the middle schools athletic coordinators office and principal;
- Provide medical services for events and games;
- Promote the safety health and wellness of the student athlete while communicating the needs of this population with Administrators School Nurses Counselors Coaches and Teachers.
- Organization and administration of policies and procedures related to Middle School Athletics;
- Injury and illness prevention
- Clinical evaluation and diagnosis;
- Immediate and emergency medical care;
- Treatment and rehabilitation of student athletes;
- Maintain appropriate medical records;
- Maintain a positive and professional relationship with all individuals both inside and outside the schools;
- Promote safety health and wellness of the staff at the Middle Schools;
- Works in conjunction with team physician referring physicians and other medical professionals regarding athletic injuries and return to competition;
- Plans and implements all components of comprehensive athletic injury/illness prevention program;
- Performs taping bandaging applying special pads etc. for student athletes;
- Monitors and controls environmental risks including but not limited to maintaining cleanliness and order of athletic training room determining practice habits and fluid intake during extreme weather conditions and assuring safety of athletes when risk of lightning is present;
- Conducts a thorough initial clinical evaluation of injuries/illnesses commonly sustained by student athletics;
- Provides training room policies and procedure information at each parent meeting for the individual sports;
- Provides care for injuries/illnesses that are not referred to a physician within accepted health care guidelines;
- Orders maintains and monitors inventory for training room supplies and equipment;
- Provides guidance and education on health care information to athletes parents and coaches on matters pertaining to physical psychological and emotional health and wellbeing of the student athlete;
- Serves as the school liaison between the medical community the athletic staff and parents/guardians;
- Maintains professional competency/certification through in-service educational activities and/or self-selected professional growth activities;
- Attends schedules and/or conducts staff and/or parent/coaches meetings and participates on committees within area of responsibility;
- Teaches and certifies all coaching staff in First Aid and CPR on a yearly basis;
- Complies with state-approved New Mexico Administrative Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession and the RRPS Employee Standards of Conduct and upholds and enforces rules administrative directives and regulations school board policies and local state and federal regulations; and
- Performs other tasks related to area of responsibilities as requested/assigned by immediate supervisor.
Work Hours:
Work hours are established in employment contract. Additional work hours may be assigned by the School Principal School Athletic Coordinator or Executive Director of Athletics.
