The Art Specialist in our Preschool Program plays a vital role in supporting the growth and development of young children including those with disabilities through inclusive and purposeful art experiences. This position focuses on fostering creativity strengthening fine motor skills and encouraging self-expression in a nurturing environment. By designing developmentally appropriate projects and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team the Art Specialist helps integrate art into the broader curriculum and ensures that each childs IEP goals are meaningfully supported through artistic exploration.
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions of Position:
Plan prepare and implement age-appropriate and culturally responsive art activities that align with the early childhood curriculum and IEP goals.
Differentiate instruction and materials to accommodate children with varying developmental levels abilities and sensory needs.
Support the development of fine motor skills through targeted art techniques and tools (e.g. cutting painting drawing sculpting).
Use art to support language development emotional regulation and social skills.
Incorporate multiple art forms and media including painting collage sculpture printmaking and digital art when appropriate.
Facilitate both individual and group art experiences promoting collaboration self-expression and inclusion.
Develop and maintain a safe clean and stimulating art environment that encourages exploration and creativity.
Display student artwork throughout the school environment to promote a sense of pride and ownership.
Coordinate art projects for special events holidays or classroom themes.
Assist in creating materials and visual supports for classroom use (e.g. classroom signs visual schedules).
Provide input for IEP development as needed particularly in areas related to creativity fine motor skills and social participation.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings parent conferences and professional development sessions.
Communicate regularly with teaching staff and therapists to support curriculum integration and child development.
Collaborate on family engagement initiatives such as art shows take-home activities or parent workshops.
Monitor and manage art supply inventory submit supply orders and ensure safe use and storage of materials.
Maintain accurate documentation of activities lesson plans and student progress.
Support school-wide initiatives and contribute to a positive and inclusive school climate.
Highschool Diploma or GED Required
Experience working with preschool-aged children particularly those with disabilities.
Understanding of developmentally appropriate practice sensory integration and inclusive teaching strategies.
Strong creativity and ability to adapt lessons to individual needs.
Excellent communication collaboration and classroom management skills.
Culturally competent and sensitive to the needs of diverse learners and families.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Organized proactive and flexible in approach to planning and instruction.
Proficient in basic documentation and recordkeeping.
Preferred:
Bachelors degree in Art Education Early Childhood Education Special Education or a related field.
