Speech Language Facilitator
Position Description
POSITION: Speech Language Teletherapy Facilitator
REPORTS TO: School Based Administration and EC Department
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months
PAY GRADE:55
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
Nature of Work
The Teletherapy Facilitators primary role as a member of the educational team is to facilitate therapy services between the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) and students as well as communication between the SLP and classroom teachers administrators and other school staff as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitates virtual provision of Speech/Language services for all students in the assigned school regardless of educational placement by monitoring technology and equipment managing the environment for service provision maintaining student safety during instruction and filing materials and documentation appropriately.
- Follows the schedule by navigating the building to engage with students; guiding them to/from services or moving technology to their location as needed.
- Previews classroom setting (including lighting placement etc.) and modifies physical environment as needed to ensure the provision of equal access to visual and auditory information for students receiving Speech/Language services via virtual service.
- Collaborates with the SLP and other school staff to ensure the needs of students are met and serves as a liaison within the school environment promoting positive and cooperative relationships.
- Monitors student comprehension and provides instructional reinforcement as needed under the direction of the SLP. The teletherapy facilitator can repeat and reinforce classroom instruction and foster appropriate classroom communication strategies and student self advocacy skills. The teletherapy facilitator is not a tutor teacher or teacher assistant. The teletherapy facilitator gradually leads students toward more responsibility for his/her own education communicative competence and self advocacy.
- Assists teachers and administration with duties that contribute to the enhancement of the classroom environment while not interfering with the primary duty of teletherapy facilitation.
- Follows all school policies as stated in individual school handbooks and performs other duties required of all building staff as directed by the building principal to promote the safety and welfare of all students in the school as long as duties do not interfere with the primary role of supporting the SLP in provision of virtual services.
- Demonstrates professionalism applying appropriate codes of conduct to the educational setting.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Proficiency in independent technology usage through both PC and Mac operating systems. Proficiency in Google Platforms including Drive Gmail and Calendar; Microsoft Platforms including Teams Word and Powerpoint; and Adobe PDF.
- Ability to work with students of varying maturational communicative cognitive and functional educational levels.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms with competence in English grammar and mechanics (spelling capitalization and punctuation) and strong interpersonal skills.
- Understanding of the potential impact of communication impairment on development and learning in the areas of language literacy and relationship building.
- Skills in the communication modes used by students with whom s/he would be working and appropriate strategies to facilitate all modes of communication.
- Knowledge of current federal and state legal mandates related to students with IEPs particularly procedural policies and confidentiality requirements.
- Desire to continue development of knowledge skills and abilities in the field and the completion of appropriate staff development training to attain further knowledge skills and abilities including the completion of Individual Growth Plans as appropriate.
- General background in liberal arts science and math to allow understanding of content in K-12 curriculum areas.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Two-year degree or equivalent
- Experience working with EC students with varying communication needs within the public school setting (preferred).
- Specialized training or the willingness to participate in training in the use of assistive devices amplification and speech/language facilitation techniques.
