Job Description

English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor degree or higher required.
  2. Valid Alabama Professional Educator Certification in English as a second language (ESL) or National Board Certification with TESOL endorsement.
  3. Valid Alabama driver license reliable transportation and evidence of insurance.
  4. Minimum of three years of demonstrated knowledge skills and teaching success with ELLs is preferred.
  5. Must be fluent in English and Spanish bilingual is preferred.
  6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Background Check Required: (HB 402 ACT 99-361 Alabama Legislature) Upon offer of employment employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

REPORT TO: Director of Federal Programs and School Based Principal

JOB GOAL: To increase the English language proficiency (ELP) and achievement of English Language Learners by:

  1. Modeling of direct K-12 instruction to teachers using different classrooms and school sites to facilitate instruction with the application of best teaching practices to support ELLs through explicit academic language development vocabulary instruction and effective sheltered instruction techniques for ELLs.
  2. Enhancing teachers understanding of cultural awareness the application of instructional strategies that optimize the learning for English Learners. Coaching teachers to apply most effective teaching tools skills and attitudes to increase student engagement to support a standards-based learning environment for ELLs to increase academic achievement across the content areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Applicable to All Employees:

  • Attend on a regular and predictable basis.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness.
  • Uphold Board policies including the anti-harassment program.
  • Work in a cooperative manner with students teachers staff supervisors and the public.
  • Work effectively and efficiently under time and productivity standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB DUTIES:

Any one position may not include all of the listed duties nor do all of the listed examples include all tasks that may be found in positions within this classification:

  1. Provides evaluation and testing for non-English speaking and limited proficiency students.
  2. Provides assessment for newly arriving non-English speaking students.
  3. Confers with classroom teachers regarding each students program.
  4. Provides support training resource information and quarterly progress reports to ELL tutors classroom teachers and administrators.
  5. Publishes documents meets and instructs assigned ELL classes in the locations and the times designated while ensuring school office staff are notified of absences in a timely manner.
  6. Creates and maintains an instructional environment within the limits of the resources provided by the district that is conducive to student-owned learning goal-oriented and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students.
  7. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and communicates these objectives with ELL students.
  8. Provides tutoring and/or note taking and other support services (such as photocopying typing record keeping etc.) when necessary and interpreting is not needed.
  9. Employs instructional methods and material that are appropriate for meeting stated objectives prepares for classes and maintains written evidence of preparation.
  10. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports and counseling to parents as required concerning academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.
  11. Provides interpreting depending on the needs of the student in the educational setting.
  12. Participates in educational team meetings providing insight on the success of communication strategies.
  13. Provides interpreting for extracurricular activities and parent meetings as directed (such as back to school night graduation etc.). These activities/meetings may extend beyond the school day.
  14. Provides assistance with orientations to bilingual students and parents.
  15. Attends scheduled meetings at the Central Office and schools.
  16. Maintains weekly documentation of visits and/or communications by phone or email with teachers of ELL students.
  17. Maintains certification by completing continuing education units required and continues personal professional growth and upgrading of skills appropriate to teaching assignments.
  18. Works with school ELL liaisons and participates in Eligibility Determination Committee meetings LEP meetings Teacher/Parent Conferences or other meetings as appropriate.
  19. Maintains and provides for all ELL student records accurately within assigned time frames and as required by the district and the State Department.
  20. Submits travel reports to base school on the first of each month.
  21. Maintains the confidentiality of the student and family.
  22. Performs other duties as assigned by the teacher or principal.



WORK SCHEDULE: The work day shall be established by the Federal Programs Director and/or building-based principal(s) but shall not exceed 7.5 hours per day excluding hour for a duty-free lunch unless other arrangements are made by the supervisor.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move a minimum of 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move a minimum of 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to communicate effectively in English using proper grammar and vocabulary stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop kneel crouch or crawl.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

The environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the job and are not meant to be all inclusive. Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.

Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated facilities. Exposure to a building in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning instruction and/or operation of equipment. Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS:While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to compare analyze communicate coordinate instruct compute synthesize evaluate use interpersonal skills and compile. Occasionally required to copy and negotiate.

EMPLOYMENT: This is a ten-month contract (200 days). Salary range is based on board approved salary schedule.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of Certified Personnel.
