Job Description

The Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs (VPFA) is within the Office of the Provost and works closely with the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor and faculty across the university to support the continued excellence of DU faculty by enhancing faculty development initiatives increasing faculty diversity and building a strong inclusive and collaborative faculty community.

Position Summary

This position works closely with the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs (VPFA) academic leadership and faculty across the university to support the continued excellence of DU faculty by enhancing faculty development programs and building a strong and collaborative faculty community.

The individual in this role will serve the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor and the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs (VPFA). Working closely with the Provost this individual will serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Trustees Faculty and Educational Affairs Committee (FEAC). In addition as directed by the Provost this person will collaborate with including but not limited to Academic Deans Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Senior Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education Vice Provost for Internationalization Faculty Affairs Associate Deans (FAAD) and the Chair Advisory Board). This role involves planning and implementing multiple multi-year programs that include small and large-scale events campus-wide coordination compliance with ADA and digital accessibility standards and responsible resource allocation. The individual will work closely with the program-leading committees and serve on those committees (e.g Accessibility Council AI Steering Committee Ideas to Impact Provost Conference Planning Committee) Faculty Affairs Faculty Fellows guest lecturers campus offices participating departments Faculty Senate external partners and Office of the Provost and VPFA staff.

Essential Functions

Development and Management

  • Design and Implementation: Design implement and oversee programs that meet the needs of the University community with a focus on innovative approaches and solutions. This includes developing programming setting goals overseeing implementation maintaining detailed documentation and ensuring alignment with the Office of the Provost and Universitys strategic objectives.
  • Execution: Develop and manage program work plans which include: defining scope establishing schedules time management stakeholder engagement deliverables milestones etc. Execute work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements. Facilitate collaboration and communication between different departments for smooth execution and alignment between activities and overall goals and objectives.
  • Financial Management: Work with the Provost VPFA and Business & Operations to develop comprehensive budgets for each program manage financial resources and track programs to meet budgets. Support financial accountability and transparency for programs including budget development and forecasting financial reporting and compliance with University policies and federal state and city regulations.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance management efficiency and effectiveness. Promote a culture of innovation continuous learning and support evaluation practices to determine the effectiveness of programs. Stay informed about higher education trends and advancements to keep programs current and relevant. Support integration and alignment of various programs connected to the Office of the Provost.

Stakeholder Collaboration and Communication

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with faculty staff and external partners to define objectives goals and deliverables.
  • Encourage and support innovative ideas for programs throughout the lifecycle. Conduct appropriate follow-up and completion of action items. Facilitate regular meetings and communicate on a consistent basis to stakeholders about strategy adjustments and progress. Use various communication channels to keep stakeholders informed and engaged.
  • Event Planning: Oversee and organize events to achieve their intended objectives. Direct scheduling budgeting speaker coordination communications catering and address potential problems as they arise.
  • Communications: Work with Office of the Provost and Marketing and Communication staff on communications including web presence and other avenues of publicizing program progress such as newsletters. Develop and implement communication strategies to promote visibility and engagement.

Team Leadership

  • Team Leadership: Lead and motivate teams providing guidance and support to successful outcomes. Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment. Conduct regular team meetings to review status and plan future actions. Provide strategic insights and recommendations based on progress and outcomes.
  • Supervision of Graduate Students: Supervise and mentor graduate students involved in Programs. Provide guidance support and professional development opportunities to enhance their skills and contributions.

Safety and Compliance

  • Compliance: Support activities comply with University policies federal state and city regulations. Support compliance with ADA and digital accessibility standards.
  • Emergency Planning: Collaborate with the Office of the Provost Office of the Chancellor and Campus Safety teams for emergency planning and coordination.

Board of Trustees Support

  • In close collaboration with the Provost this individual will serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Trustees Faculty and Educational Affairs Committee (FEAC). Responsibilities include preparing meeting materials coordinating logistics drafting agendas and minutes and ensuring timely communication between the Provosts Office and FEAC members as well as communication to other individuals following meetings (e.g. faculty awarded emeritus promotion and tenure emeritus). The role requires a high level of discretion organizational skill and the ability to synthesize complex academic and strategic information for trustee engagement.

Other Functions:

  • Participate in other University activities relevant to the position and at the direction of the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor and VPFA.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and needs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated understanding of management responsibilities including task management resource management communications management and escalation of issues.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage competing responsibilities.
  • Excellent critical thinking interpersonal organizational oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with individuals at a variety of levels within the organization.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Excellent time management organization attention to detail and resourcefulness.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree
  • Experience in higher education
  • Minimum 3 years of management strategic planning event planning or a combination of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD degree in higher education or advanced degree in a related field.
  • Experience with coursework in or certification in management.
  • Certification in mediation and conflict resolution.

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 12.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $78000-$88000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal salary equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
