Job Description

Primary Purpose:

The Journalism Teacher will deliver instruction in journalism yearbook and commercial photography. This role includes teaching studentscore principles of media literacy publication design photojournalism and digital storytelling. The teacher will oversee the production of the school yearbook and support district and campus communication through commercial-style photography projects.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelors degree or equivalent experience

Valid Texas teaching certificate in journalism CTE or Technology Applications

ESL certification preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Strong knowledge of journalism photography photo editing and yearbook production

Proficiency in relevant software

Effective classroom management and communication skills

Experience:

Student teaching approved internship or related work experience.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Journalism & Media Instruction

  1. Teach students to write edit and publish articles using journalistic standards and AP Style.
  2. Instruct on ethics media law layout design and multimedia reporting.

Yearbook Advising

  1. Lead the development production and publishing of the annual school yearbook.
  2. Guide students in photography graphic design theme development page layout and deadline management.
  3. Collaborate with campus staff to ensure inclusive coverage of all student activities and organizations.

Commercial Photography

  1. Teach photography principles including manual camera settings composition lighting editing and photo ethics.
  2. Instruct students using DSLR cameras and industry-standard editing software (e.g. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom).
  3. Support school and district needs by supervising students in capturing event photography portraits and promotional content.

Technology & Tools

  1. Utilize relevant software for design and editing.
  2. Maintain and manage classroom equipment including cameras lenses lighting gear and editing stations.

Student Support & Extracurriculars

  1. Mentor students in UIL journalism and photography competitions.
  2. Foster leadership and collaboration within publication teams.

Professional Collaboration

  1. Coordinate with the districts Communications Department for event coverage photo needs and promotional opportunities.
  2. Participate in ongoing professional development and campus events.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

Environment: Frequent districtwide travel; occasional statewide travel; occasional outside work with exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures dust noise vibration and chemical and electrical hazards

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
