Job Description

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Director Veterans Success Center the incumbent is responsible for providing basic administrative and clerical support to the Veterans Success Center team to include cross functional support to other areas of the unit as needed.
The Veterans Success Center Lead Student Assistant will provide operational support at the Veterans Success Center to include staffing the office answering phones responding to emails assisting students virtually (e.g. over Zoom) provide in-person services and tours table at department and university events providing information to visitors and assisting the VSC director and other department staff.

The Student Assistant will also provide additional administrative support to the Department by providing additional oversight of the Palm Desert Campus Veterans Success Center and its administrative functions.

Our goal is to bring in those passionate about supporting former current and future service members of the United States Armed Forces and their dependents with the transition from higher education to career navigation through their academic experience and celebration of their service and achievements by offering high-quality support services resources and events while carrying out the Universitys mission and vision statement.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Under direct supervision duties include but not limited to basic clerical support including but not limited to:

  • Answering phones
  • Responding to emails
  • Assisting students virtually (e.g. over Zoom)

Providing In-Person Services including but not limited to:

  • Tours of the Veterans Success Center
  • Dispensing accurate information to visitors
  • Table at department and university events

Administrative Support including but not limited to:

  • Assisting the VSC director and other department staff
  • Monitoring and reporting staff time and attendance assisting with timekeeping procedures
  • Supporting the training and onboarding process for new paraprofessionals and volunteers/interns
  • Maintaining up-to-date training materials and ensuring consistent onboarding practices are followed

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • The incumbent carries out other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to attending professional development events and meetings transporting documents to other offices on campus scheduling events assisting event coordination and communicates regularly with other team members and VSC Staff to ensure University policies and procedures are followed.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty staff and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.

Required Qualifications

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate Student
  • 2.3 minimum cumulative GPA
  • Current or former U.S. servicemember or U.S. military dependent.
  • Able to carry materials and table in either indoor or outdoor settings.
  • Familiar with Office Software such as Word PowerPoint Excel Outlook Teams Adobe Acrobat Zoom

Compensation and Benefits:

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.50 per hour.

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

Position Information:

Work status: Part-Time Temporary Seasonal

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:00 am 5:00 pm).

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).

This is an On-Campus Only position. Student Employees are not eligible to telecommute at any time.

As of January 1 2022 the CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy prohibits the hiring of employees to perform CSU-related work outside the state of California.

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may be required for student employment purposes. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check when required may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Drivers License may be required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid drivers license and reflects driving record.
