Small Equipment Mechanic Physical Plant/Grounds Department

Job Description

The Small Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance repair and servicing of small-engine equipment used in grounds operations including mowers trimmers blowers utility carts chainsaws and related equipment. This role ensures that all grounds equipment is safe efficient and operational supporting the overall mission of providing a well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing campus environment. This position is also responsible for the upkeep of campus grounds (mowing trimming snow removal etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in the maintenance and repair of small engines and related equipment.
  • Valid drivers license.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds work in various weather conditions and operate grounds maintenance equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in small engine repair or equivalent vocational training.
  • Experience working in an institutional or municipal setting.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with utility vehicle repair (e.g. Sprayers Cushmans Zero turn mowers vehicles or similar equipment)
  • Familiarity with diesel engine maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain sanitation trucks and recycling trucks. Retrieve empty and return trash and recycling containers at campus facilities.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs on small engines (2-cycle and 4-cycle) hydraulic systems electrical components and fuel systems.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on equipment including oil changes blade sharpening filter replacements and seasonal preparation/storage.
  • Assist in mowing trimming weeding and tree trimming/removal.
  • Maintain accurate service and maintenance records on all grounds equipment.
  • Assist in the ordering and inventory of parts tools and supplies needed for repairs and maintenance.
  • Keep the mechanics shop clean organized and in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Assist with the training of grounds staff on basic equipment care and operation.
  • Support snow removal efforts by maintaining snowblowers spreaders and similar winter equipment.
  • Occasionally assist grounds crews with operational duties especially during peak seasons or special events.
  • Occasionally assist with Grounds work tickets around campus including moving furniture fixing athletic nets etc.

Appointment Date:Start date will be determined after acceptance of an offer.
