Job Description
Reporting to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer the Unit Director of the Emergency Department (ED) has 24-hour responsibility for the management of nursing personnel other personnel and patient care in the Emergency Department including the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) and Green Zone physician or advanced practice providers (PA or NP) doing fast track patients or a low acute patient that can be treated quickly and discharged. This role contributes to the nursing services and the clinical enterprise through support of philosophy objectives and educational efforts. Provides administrative leadership and direction to all assigned departments including planning directing financial performance performance improvement human resource management evaluation of care and service initiatives.

The Unit Director works closely with the interprofessional team and represents UCSF Health / Adult Services for specific projects or initiatives at local hospitals or community agencies and is part of the Hospital Incident Command Center for local and regional emergencies. This position will be an important part of the New Hospital planning as a new emergency room/services will be reorganized. This leader will be part of the ED triad that includes the Unit Director Emergency Medicine leadership and the Medical Director of the ED. This triad will be responsible for setting the strategic direction of the Parnassus ED as well as working with other nursing and physician leadership to organize the operations of the ED.

This role strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product of service to leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the patient and family experience. As a customer-focused team member he/she must be accessible flexible knowledgeable and responsive. Supports UCSFs overall mission to provide high quality patient care teaching and research.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $253900 - $269400 (Annual Rate).

  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • BLS by American Heart Association
  • ACLS/PALS or ENPC
  • Progressive and recent nursing administration and leadership experience in Emergency Services in an academic medical center (within the last 5 years)
  • Strong hospital management experience with progressive and in-depth expertise in patient care services. Knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements as well as related legislative accreditation licensing and compliance environments
  • Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote an environment for effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines
  • Excellent leadership fiscal and operations management skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians management and staff from all disciplines
  • Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork collaboration and excellence in patient outcomes


    • Masters Degree in Nursing or relevant area preferred
    • ANCC RN specialty certification in Nurse Executive or Nurse Executive-Advanced or Certification in Emergency Nursing (CEN)


    • Registered Nurse in the State of California
    • BLS by American Heart Association
    • ACLS /PALS or ENPC

    Department Description
    The Parnassus Emergency Department provides highly complex care to a diverse patient population with an emphasis on serving patients in need of emergent or urgent care. The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) provides ongoing care to patients who require more observation in order to return to them to their optimal health.
    The team in the Emergency Department that will be reporting to this leader consists of Registered Nurses Patient Care Technicians Patient Support Assistants and Assistant Unit Directors. Nurses on this unit are a highly motivated and engaged group of professionals providing outstanding care to the complex patient populations served. Teamwork among our nursing staff as well as physician and nurse collaboration is well established and continues to be a priority .

    The exposure to the diverse patient populations and varied levels of complexity provides the team the ability to develop keen assessment skills. The unit is fast paced and highly rewarding with many hands on learning opportunities available on a daily basis.
